Mission Statement

The Rural Pathways Project supports the identity and career development of teens living in rural communities through mentoring, education, and scholarship.

About This Cause

The “Rural Higher Education Crisis” as coined by The Atlantic, continues to puzzle researchers. “Forty-two percent of people ages 18 to 24 are enrolled in all of higher education, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, but only 29 percent of rural people in that age group are enrolled, compared with nearly 48 percent from cities.” (NPR) The Rural Pathways Project aims to bridge this gap. We believe that rural students face unique, often unsupported challenges when interacting with higher education. By increasing exposure to experiences and improving access to opportunities, rural teens will be better prepared for success after high school. Founded in 2017, the Project supports the identity and career development of teens living in rural communities through mentoring, education, and scholarship. Our programming focus aims to address the three critical phases as rural students interact with higher learning. -Before college: We providing access to online learning and in-person experiences, pointed at increasing student motivation to attend college. -During college: We award scholarships to alleviate financial stress, sponsoring mentoring, and prioritize resource referral to ensure rural students feel supported and empowered during their transition away from home. -After college: We connect rural college grads to a network of internship and employment opportunities, as well as teach job search and career readiness skills. The Rural Pathways Project helps rural students identify their strengths and author their future. We broaden rural students’ world-views and support the development of ambitious goals. We help to chip away at the financial barrier to college. Because, we believe in the power, the talent, and the future of those people and places off the beaten path.
