Mission Statement
The mission of the Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) is to reduce juvenile crime and violence through “relational policing,” which includes building trusting relationships among youth, law enforcement, and the community.
About This Cause
The Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) is a youth mentorship enhancement program that utilizes educational, athletic, and recreational activities to create trust and understanding between youth and police officers by bringing them together in a fun and active environment. The Office of Community Affairs has one sergeant and officer that oversee the program. In addition, there are 14 full-time officers at each patrol station that dedicate their time to building trusting relationships with youth in their area that are also assigned to the Office of Community Affairs. The officers at the stations coordinate events in their areas, provide consistent mentorship programs, participate in sports and other recreational activities to promote a productive, interactive, and educational environment for the youth. Since March of 2022, GHPAL has made over 20,000 positive contacts with youth in our city. There are 117 total youth mentees registered with our National PAL program and we have 14 registered as “Littles” with Big Brother Big Sister. Relaunched in 2018 after being dormant for 14 years, GHPAL’s mission is “to reduce juvenile crime and violence through “Relational Policing” which includes building trusting relationships between youth, law enforcement and the community.” GHPAL members are between the ages of 8 and 18. The program includes mentorship (one-to-one or groups), athletic, enrichment, civic/service projects, recreational and educational opportunities throughout the City of Houston. GHPAL works with a number of community partners and school districts to achieve its mission. They also provide program presentations and project assistance by request as available. If you are between the ages of 8-18 and want to become a member of this exciting new program, have your parents fill out the electronic membership sign-up form. https://www.houstontx.gov/police/vip/ghpal.htm
