About This Cause
River City Inclusive Gymnastics (RCIG) launched 2016 to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to provide group fitness and gymnastics training in a safe and positive environment where children, teens, and adults with special needs can improve social skills, motor skills, self-esteem, and mental and physical well-being. We obtained nonprofit status in November of 2018 to better achieve our mission. RCIG works to achieve the following goals: 1) positively impact the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families, 2) improve the physical fitness and mental well being of all the athletes that take part in the RCIG program, 3) provide the quality coaches and appropriate equipment to enhance each athlete’s experience. The primary audience we serve is individuals of all ages who have a variety of challenges such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Attention Deficit Disorder, Intellectual Disability, and various genetic disorders. These individuals are often isolated socially and face a variety of health needs. Adults with Autism have significantly increased rates of all major psychiatric disorders and that nearly all medical conditions are more common in adults with autism, including obesity and diabetes (Croen, et. al., 2015). For children with disabilities, obesity rates are approximately 38% higher than for children without disabilities (Center for Disease Control, 2017). Many community recreational activities are not available to individuals with physical disabilities and most organizations lack the appropriate equipment and professionals trained in equipment adaptation that is needed for these individuals to participate. RCIG fills a unique niche, offering the only recreational gymnastics fitness program for individuals with disabilities throughout a five county area in Central Virginia (Henrico, Hanover, Powhatan, Goochland, Chesterfield). Current program activities include: 1) Providing a gymnastics recreation program so that individuals with disabilities are able to develop healthy lifestyle habits and build self-esteem; 2) Partnering with families to develop individualized plans for success in the program, addressing physical and social skills; 3) Working to bring in an occupational therapist in every fall and spring to work with participants and coaches around sensory integration; and 4) Implementing the Mobile Gymnastics Recreation Program to expand programming and better serve our communities.
