Mission Statement

Our mission is to break down the barriers that keep people from living full and meaningful lives. We do this by building authentic human connections, advocating with the people we support, and creating opportunities for holistic and lasting health.

About This Cause

Wisconsin Milkweed Alliance (WIMA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to supporting individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges through harm reduction, peer support, and advocacy. Rooted in the principles of self-determination, mutual aid, and lived experience, WIMA fosters healing and empowerment by ensuring people have access to compassionate, judgment-free support when they need it most. As a community-driven organization, WIMA relies on financial support from donors, grants, and partnerships to sustain and expand our life-changing programs. Every contribution helps us provide essential resources, peer-led services, and harm reduction initiatives that directly impact the lives of those we serve. WIMA’s programs provide critical support across Wisconsin, offering individuals a range of services designed to meet them where they are and empower them in their journey toward wellness. Monarch House Peer Run Respite provides a voluntary, home-like environment for individuals experiencing emotional distress, offering short-term stays where guests can step away from overwhelming situations and receive support from trained peer supporters who have faced similar challenges. Unlike traditional crisis services, Monarch House operates without coercion or clinical oversight, allowing guests to focus on self-directed healing. The respite model has been proven to reduce hospitalizations, prevent crises from escalating, and empower individuals to develop personal wellness strategies. By fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and shared lived experience, Monarch House offers an alternative to institutional settings, helping individuals regain stability in a way that honors their autonomy and resilience. For those seeking connection outside of respite services, the WIMA Warmline offers a free, confidential, peer-run support line designed for individuals who need someone to listen, understand, and offer encouragement. Unlike crisis hotlines, the Warmline provides non-judgmental conversation and emotional support from trained peers who have personally navigated mental health and substance use challenges. Whether someone is feeling overwhelmed, struggling with daily stressors, or simply needs to connect with someone who understands, the Warmline serves as a vital resource for reducing isolation, promoting emotional wellness, and offering hope. Many individuals experiencing mental health or substance use challenges struggle to find a sense of belonging. The Kaleidoscope Center is a welcoming drop-in space that fosters community, healing, and recovery through peer-led activities, support groups, and resource navigation. Designed as a safe, stigma-free environment, the Kaleidoscope Center offers peer-led support groups, workshops and activities, and resource navigation services to help individuals access housing, employment, and healthcare. By fostering connections and reducing social isolation, the Kaleidoscope Center helps individuals build resilience, strengthen self-determination, and create meaningful relationships within a supportive community. Recognizing the need for accessible harm reduction solutions, WIMA operates a harm reduction public health vending machine, ensuring that people can access essential supplies—including Narcan (naloxone), fentanyl test strips, and safer use materials—free of charge and without barriers. By reducing harm rather than punishing or stigmatizing substance use, this initiative helps save lives, prevent overdoses, and empower individuals to make informed choices about their health. Public health vending machines are an innovative, evidence-based approach to harm reduction, ensuring that individuals have access to crucial tools regardless of their circumstances. Not everyone can access traditional support services due to barriers like transportation, stigma, or systemic exclusion. To ensure that no one is left behind, WIMA’s Mobile Outreach Peer Support Program brings compassionate, person-centered support directly to individuals where they are—whether that’s in shelters, encampments, or other community spaces. Through outreach, trained peer supporters build trust and relationships with individuals who may feel disconnected from existing services, provide immediate peer support and harm reduction education, and connect individuals to vital services like housing, healthcare, mental health support, and recovery resources. This mobile approach prioritizes dignity, respect, and empowerment, ensuring that individuals facing the greatest barriers receive the support they deserve. By meeting people where they are—both physically and emotionally—our outreach program plays a critical role in bridging the gap between underserved individuals and the resources they need to thrive. WIMA’s work is made possible by the generosity of donors, grant funders, and community partners who believe in our mission to provide compassionate, peer-driven support. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, we rely on financial contributions to continue operating and expanding our programs. Your support directly impacts lives by helping us keep Monarch House open as a free, voluntary alternative to crisis services, sustain the WIMA Warmline so no one has to struggle alone, provide a welcoming space at the Kaleidoscope Center for healing and recovery, maintain access to lifesaving harm reduction supplies through our vending machine, and expand our Mobile Outreach Peer Support Program to reach more people in need. By donating to WIMA, you are helping to reduce stigma, prevent crises, and create a future where every individual has the support, resources, and community they need to lead a self-directed, fulfilling life. Together, we can make a difference. Join us in creating a world where peer support, harm reduction, and empowerment are accessible to all.
