Mission Statement

MathCup Academy Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a free world-class mathematics enrichment platform for every K-12 student. Our online platform, MathCup.com, will continuously develop materials, technologies, and activities to enrich students' mathematics learning beyond what is offered as part of school curricula. We believe mathematics enrichment can and should benefit every student, in addition to elite students. The goal of the platform is to nurture a student’s critical thinking skills and support one’s right to intellectual excellence, by providing high quality resources and immersing them in a collaborative environment.

About This Cause

MathCup Academy Inc. is providing a mathematics enrichment platform for every K-12 student. Our pioneering online platform, MathCup.com, empowers students’ learning by letting them practice, learn, interact and share (PLIS) in a social network environment. On MathCup.com, students can practice by solving quality questions, learn by watching video lessons, interact by connecting with peers to work as a team or by asking questions on a forum, share by sharing problems and videos or by sharing exciting mathematics related moments. MathCup.com makes the learning experience fun and rewarding while democratizing the knowledge. While mathematics and critical thinking skills are increasingly more important in this technology driven world, it is no secret that many students struggle with math. A recent best-selling book, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Nobel-prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman, helps explain the struggle of the students with math. Kahneman's book describes two basic modes of thinking: System 1 (fast thinking based on memories and instincts) and System 2 (the slow, deliberative thinking generally associated with mathematical reasoning). We believe the students struggle with System 2 thinking, because they do not have enough opportunity in their school work to develop this skill. We need to provide the students high quality resource and a friendly environment for individualized and stimulative learning, to help tap into their mathematics potential. Since 2017, we have been developing MathCup.com to addresses this critical need. We believe we can help every student develop mathematical reasoning by providing the resource, giving the opportunity, and injecting fun along the way. There are other not-for-profit or for-profit math education websites, for example ALEKS, Khan Academy. We are different from these sites in several aspects: 1. Our materials are designed and selected to stimulate math reasoning. We complement the standard curriculum instead of repeat it. 2. We aim to be an interactive platform and encourage students to ask questions, provide explanations on MathCup forum. One only understands a math problem when being able to clearly explain the solution to others. We believe our interactive nature can help foster the student’s math reasoning habit. 3. We encourage students and teachers to share mathematical contents, including problems and videos. We envision ultimately the majority of MathCup.com's contents will be contributed by its users. 4. We aim to inject joy and pride in the mathematics learning journey. We encourage students and teachers to post mathematics related moments, so that friends can spread and share the fun. There are also websites that aim at elite students who participate in math competitions. We believe all students can learn mathematical reasoning. We build the platform with every student in mind and make sure that our platform consists of problems and contents of varying difficulties. We believe that emerging technologies can help us to achieve the goal of reaching every K-12 student across the globe.
