Mission Statement
Not A Glum Lot’s mission is to provide opportunities for growth to addicts and alcoholics who are new to recovery and to teach them that joy and happiness are possible in sobriety; thereby reducing relapse, overdose, and death by overdose.
About This Cause
Not A Glum Lot provides fun and exciting activities to persons who are in the beginning stages of recovering from drug addiction and alcoholism. Depression, isolation, and anxiety are common in early recovery and providing connection and friendships via recreational activities is a life saving measure. The more they are enjoying their life without drugs and alcohol, the less likely they are to relapse and potentially overdose. We envision a recovery community full of people excited and motivated to continue their lives in sobriety and our goal is to reduce the alarming relapse, overdose, and death by overdose rates among addicts and alcoholics who are new to recovery. With effective collaborative partnerships with sober homes, treatment centers, and sobriety groups, Not A Glum Lot organizes safe, exciting, and trust building recreational activities for the recovery community all year long. Not A Glum Lot is leading the charge to improve the lives of this fragile recovery community full of people who are already taking heavy steps to help themselves. Teaching those in early recovery how to LIVE and enjoy life in a healthy way to naturally release the same dopamine and endorphins that they once relied on drugs and alcohol to provide. Addiction and alcoholism are formed out of a desire to change how one feels. By showing people who have removed drugs and alcohol from their lives how to feel good, how to feel happy, and offering them the chance to feel excited about their lives, the desire to use drugs and alcohol to achieve these feelings is diminished. The more they are enjoying life without drugs or alcohol, the less likely they are to relapse and potentially overdose. It takes just an initial push to re-experience life fully sober and with joy—and new, healthy habits form. And once this happens, there’s no stopping the recovered individual from achieving long term sobriety. Furthermore, this is a population of people who are already taking gigantic steps to help themselves. I believe this is summed up well in a quote from Chris Rock, “I’d always end up broken down on the highway. When I stood there trying to flag someone down, nobody stopped. But when I pushed my own car, other drivers would get out and push with me. If you want help, help yourself – people like to see that.” Our participants are in the act of pushing and helping themselves and they do not require being sponsored for a year or two years as in other charity campaigns. Attending one single event can completely change the trajectory for our participants allowing our funding to reach an enormous number of participants in a short period of time rather than a small number of participants over a long period of time. Our participants need only attend one event to completely crush their previous fears that life would be unenjoyable without being buzzed or high. Once this fear is crushed and their eyes are opened to the possibilities, their lives are forever changed.
