MACES LANE COMMUNITY CENTER

CAMBRIDGE, Maryland, 21613-5428 United States

Mission Statement

The MLCC was established to, 1) preserve the original building structure as well as the rich history of the African American educational experience; 2) inspire present and future generations to excel in every area of life; 3) empower the community to make every challenge an opportunity.

About This Cause

The Mace’s Lane High School was constructed in 1952 and was the only high school where African-American students within Dorchester County could attend during segregation. The building was changed to a middle/junior high school in 1969, because of integration and was closed in 2004 when the new Mace’s Lane Middle School opened. In 2017, The Mace’s Lane High School Alumni Association (MLHSAA) and the Good Shepherd Association (GSA) formed the Mace’s Lane Community Center Steering Committee to evaluate the community’s interest and the cost to repurpose the old high school into a community center that would serve primarily the youth, but also facilitate services for the entire community. In September of 2018 the Mace’s Lane Community Center, Inc. (MLCC) was formed to oversee the fundraising and repurposing of the old Maces Lane High School as well as the operation of the center when construction is completed. The project is scheduled to be completed by forth quarter 2024 or first quarter 2025. The structure was nearly 26,000 square feet of office space of which approximately 19,000 square feet will be renovated to serve as a community center. The structure is within a residential community with close proximity to several secondary educational institutions. MLCC will house: 1) A Boys & Girls Club (BGC) The BGC has well established and proven programming that will allow the MLCC to effectively meet the needs of the youth from day one. 2) A full-size gymnasium which can be used for BGC activities, sporting events, as well as an auditorium for larger events, such as concerts, trade fairs, banquets, etc. 3) The Edythe M. Jolley Museum and Cultural Center will display the rich history of Mace’s Lane High School and the educational experience of the African American community during segregation and after integration. The MLCC will document the educational experiences of the community, faculty, and student (alumni) during segregation. The plan is to gather oral historical accounts through interviewing the faculty and students (alumni) of Mace’s Lane High School during segregation. There will also be artifacts on display collected from various sources.
