About This Cause

Azeem Family Foundation Inc will launch the only Community Resource Room (CRR) on the East Side of Buffalo, NY in the Masten district. According to the Partnership for Public Good (2024), the Masten district is 82 percent African-American and Immigrant populations, has the largest population of youth and seniors, and is almost 12 percent in unemployment. The area has been impacted by racial segregation including a history of redlining, disinvestment, and discriminatory lending. According to the Erie County Health Disparities report (2023) the health and wellbeing of historically marginalized communities can be exacerbated by systemic racism, trauma, and other barriers. The recent events of the Tops Massacre and severe blizzard compounded and worsened the disparities within the Buffalo East side. The Tops massacre, a racially motivated mass shooting at the only full-service grocery store in the East side of Buffalo which is a historically African-American neighborhood occurred in May 2022. The massacre further created a challenge to families accessing mental health support, food, and employement in the aftermath (Erie County Health Disparities report, 2023). In December 2022, a severe and deadly storm struck Erie County with the storm most impacting the city of Buffalo. The storm resulted in multiple deaths and left many residents without heat, unable to contact family, stranded, and no emergency response services. These impacts were most acute in segregated, poverty-stricken, and underserved residents. The association among social determinants of health, disparities, and compounded traumas increases the need for positive outcomes for marginalized and disadvantaged individuals and communities in Erie County. Thus, the Azeem Family Foundation has continued to create comprehensive projects to begin restorative healing such as the CRR. The Masten District the only district without a library or business center. The District is identified as an internet desert with a walk score of 72 and limited public transportation to nearby sites that provide these services. These unmet needs leave its residents without vital access to the educational and professional resources. It deprives the community of services including access to computers, internet, and digital literacy programs. Technology services such as these are essential to job searches, skill building, academic success, and resource access. The technology center will fill the gap and provide equitable access to tools and resources for its residents. Further enhancing quality of life and the district’s economic and social development. The CRR room is a technology-focused space designed to provide community members with access to resources. It will be equipped with desktop computers, laptops, a printer, scanner, copier, and reliable internet. The hub will be used for educational, job readiness, and digital literacy and be located on the East Side of Buffalo at 1373 Fillmore Ave., Buffalo, NY 14211.
