Mission Statement
The Paristown Salon is a registered association with the State of Kentucky, with the charitable purpose of supporting the revitalization, growth, quality of life, and economic development of the historic Paristown Neighborhood and surrounding communities. The Salon provides opportunity for all residents and businesses in Paristown, which will ultimately have a positive economic impact on the surrounding Downtown Louisville edge neighborhoods. By promoting safety, trust and connectivity in social and public spaces to foster open dialogue, regular interaction, mutual ownership, healthy lifestyles, and a sense of community among residents, business owners and visitors, The Paristown Salon will produce a sense of collective well-being among the community and ultimately a thriving, growing neighborhood.
About This Cause
In 2019, the Paristown Salon established 501(c)3 classification in order to support the neighborhood and the residents of historic Paristown in Louisville, Kentucky. The Salon will be funded by a voluntary one percent assessment from all sales and services provided within the Paristown neighborhood. Additional Paristown Salon revenues may include fees charged to temporary residents, art and cultural educational grants, economic and urban development grants, health and wellness educational grants, and private donations that help support the preservation and strategic growth of Paristown. One hundred percent of all revenues will be utilized for the benefit of the residents and businesses that are part of the Paristown neighborhood and surrounding communities. SAFETY Safety is a local issue and two of its major determinants are the number of neighbors one knows by name and the extent to which people are present and interacting in the public space near home. The Paristown Salon promotes safety by providing regular opportunities for community interaction and open dialogue. The Paristown Salon will be responsive to the community security needs by providing a single point of contact for handling safety issues. Those actions could include enhanced lighting where needed, dispatching security personnel if needed for known or emerging safety problems, interfacing with LMPD regarding trespassing issues, mitigating problem street behavior, and communicating with the community regarding safety concerns. In addition, The Paristown Salon will be hosting regular community special events that will significantly increase the pedestrian activity throughout the neighborhood which will substantially increase the safety for residents and businesses alike. EDUCATION Fostering education, cultural activities and the arts within Paristown and the surrounding area is an important objective of The Salon as the association will bring together the best thinkers and practitioners in the field of “New Urbanism” to discuss and debate at the highest level. Paristown will be recognized as a major arts and cultural area in Downtown Louisville. Local art fairs and competitions that attract people from all walks of life will be hosted by The Paristown Salon throughout the year. The neighborhood will host a wide range of educational events that may include networking and inspiring events like Creative Mornings featuring guest speakers, seminars from groups like the Council on New Urbanism (CNU), presentations of special interest from the Green Council, Greater Louisville Inc. (GLI), Leadership Louisville as well as numerous other area agencies. With the Kentucky Center Performing Arts' new music venue as the anchor of Paristown, the community will benefit from youth music education and performance opportunities overseen by Teddy Abrams, conductor of the Louisville Orchestra and other well-known local musical artists and youth music education instructors. The Paristown neighborhood encourages pedestrian activity and the support of a healthy lifestyle education will be a hallmark of The Paristown Salon. Fitness events for the entire family will be a regular occurrence in the neighborhood. From outdoor yoga to “Family Fitness Fridays” Paristown residents will enjoy learning about and experiencing an active and healthy lifestyle. The Paristown Salon will support open space designed for dogs where community-wide responsible pet ownership educational events and activities will take place. PRESERVATION Documenting and preserving the history and redevelopment of Paristown in partnership with residents, historians and others, The Paristown Salon will draw from the rich history of one of Louisville’s first “suburbs” as a source of inspiration for the neighborhood’s future. The Salon will work with various historical societies in Louisville like the Filson Historical Society to educate and promote the history of Paristown. Walking tours, educational presentations, and publicity highlighting the historical perspective will all serve to underscore the important historical influence the neighborhood has had on Louisville. HEALTH It is widely recognized that longevity and strong social support networks improve overall health, and we believe the Paristown neighborhood, through the support of The Paristown Salon can – and should – provide those networks. The Salon will promote health through the creation of strong community networks and neighborhood connections. These important relationships will be strengthened through: - Regular neighborhood communication via social media and website - An annual community event that brings residents and businesses together to achieve a neighborhood improvement i.e., “Spring into Action” cleanup day that includes volunteers and fellowship after the work is completed - Various programmed community health events that could include diabetes prevention, healthy food choices, fitness challenges, yoga, pet activities, walking groups and much more ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES Vibrant neighborhoods contribute to resource conservation in many ways. The Paristown Salon will promote sustainable living and will set a national example as a zero community, employing green practices whenever possible to reduce its impact on the environment. The Paristown Salon will also pursue the criteria for becoming a LEED-certified neighborhood. LOCAL FOOD The local food movement is just one manifestation of the positive association between neighborhoods and the production and distribution of food. The Paristown Salon will strive to encourage the use of local food in area restaurants and will promote the installation and management of back- and front-yard gardens, as well as a community garden space. - Educational events with the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service Master Gardner program will be held to share knowledge and foster community connection - A weekly Farmer’s Market featuring locally grown produce will provide healthy options in an area that desperately needs fresh fruit and vegetable options
