About This Cause
The T2 Fitness Foundation is a United Way Certified Organization through the United Way of South Hampton Roads. The T2 Fitness Foundation's featured program is the T2 Fresh Start Initiative, which is a free 12-week comprehensive wellness program created to address health disparities affecting high-risk individuals in under-resourced communities in Virginia and North Carolina who have been diagnosed with chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. The program includes fitness training, life coaching, healthy cooking classes with food provided, food-based group mental health therapy, and health monitoring. It is designed not only to reduce the impact of these chronic conditions but also to improve participants' fitness levels, establish healthier relationships with food, and teach behavioral change techniques so that, after the program ends, they can sustain a healthier lifestyle for years to come. Our programs are strategically located in areas with high rates of diabetes and hypertension, as identified by various reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), County Health Rankings, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and local hospital assessments such as Sentara Health’s Community Assessment and Bon Secours Community Health Needs Assessment. High-risk individuals in these communities face a wide range of challenges, including persistent health issues, intergenerational poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to education. Therefore, any initiative aiming to address their health concerns must be equally comprehensive and multifaceted. The T2 Fresh Start Initiative is designed to tackle these challenges head-on by offering a holistic wellness program that addresses every aspect of participants’ health. In addition to fitness experts, nurse practitioners, and nutrition specialists, the T2 Fresh Start Initiative incorporates behavioral change specialists, life coaches, and therapists. Research shows that behavioral and psychological factors play a significant role in breaking generational eating habits and lifestyles that have been passed down through families. To transform a community long plagued by chronic health conditions, it's essential not only to educate individuals on improving their diet and physical activity but also to address the environmental and cultural contexts in which they are attempting to make these changes. Started in 2022, our program has reached over 400 individuals with programming taking place in the following cities: Norfolk, Va; Suffolk, Va; Isle of Wight County, Va; Franklin, Va; Petersburg, Va; and Gates County, Nc. Considering the profound transformations experienced by hundreds of individuals who have completed our program, and the ongoing impact of diabetes and hypertension on our communities, we are committed to expanding the program into new localities each year. With your support, we can continue offering a comprehensive and effective continuum of care for individuals battling these chronic conditions, helping them achieve lasting improvements in their quality of life. In 2024, we started our second program which is T2 Fresh Start Walking MeetUp Group. Driven by the desire to keep the momentum going, sustain the healthier habits we've incorporated into our weekly routine, and continue surrounding ourselves with people committed to improving their health one step at a time after completing our comprehensive wellness program called the T2 Fresh Start Initiative, we've established the T2 Fresh Start Walking MeetUp Group Collective. This group meets weekly in the evenings in Suffolk, Franklin,, and Norfolk to help us improve the physical, mental, and social health of residents in these communities! The goals we aim to achieve through the T2 Fresh Start Walking MeetUp Groups are as follows: *Engage the Community: Encourage participation in low-barrier physical activities that are easy on the joints, helping to reduce the risks of heart disease, diabetes, or obesity, or maintain proper control of existing medical conditions. *Social Health Alternatives: Help the community discover ways to improve their social health without compromising their physical health, such as connecting with friends and family in person without focusing on eating. *Improve Cardiovascular and Mental Health: Assist community members in enhancing their cardiovascular and mental health without the need for a gym membership or recreation center pass. We leave no person behind, all fitness levels encouraged to attend our walks. *Enhance Socialization: Foster socialization and bonding within the community, creating a stronger sense of belonging. Walking group leaders will guide attendees to engage in conversations with new individuals they meet during the walking meetups. *Accountability: Provide accountability and motivation through the in-person social aspect of the walking meetup groups, helping individuals stay consistent with their fitness routines between T2 Fresh Start Initiative cohort sessions. Our T2 Fresh Start Walking MeetUp Groups are an ongoing, year-round initiative designed to help residents consistently integrate walking into their weekly healthy lifestyle. (Our Isle of Wight Walking Meetup group, will begin in 2025). Meetups take place in locations that are easily accessible for individuals with limited automobile transportation.
