Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide hope by reaching into a city's most troubled areas, and by example, show the power of goodness in the face of adversity. Teaching youngsters the power of the pen… and then rewarding their efforts, by translating their wishes into reality, not only positively reinforces their nascent literacy skills, it also helps them author a different, more positive narrative about life, one sparked by optimism and the vision of a brighter future.
About This Cause
Santa for a Day is a certified 501 (c) (3) Public Charity, and we answer letters to Santa from kids in underserved communities. This two-pronged literacy component is vital to our mission: Volunteers helping, teaching youngsters the power of the pen… and then donors rewarding their efforts, by translating their wishes into reality, not only positively reinforces their nascent literacy skills, but it also helps our participants author a different, more positive narrative about life, one sparked by optimism and the vision of a brighter future. Founded in 2018, SFAD partnered with the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and had a very successful test. Our aim was to reach into Chicago's most troubled areas and, by example, show the power of goodness in the face of adversity. In 2019, we grew that model adding Milwaukee and Detroit. In 2020, we added strategic partnerships with the Housing Authorities of Atlanta, Boston and Philadelphia, and we forged important new partnerships with Google, Amazon, AWS, Uber Freight, and ESPN. In 2021 we welcomed the Atlanta Hawks as a Title Sponsor and we reached a strategic partnership with the KC Royals (The Royals Foundation) as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater KC. We welcomed the Green Bay Packers in 2022, and we added our 8th city, Evanston, IL in 2023. 2024 was another challenging year but through it all, one thing was abundantly clear: We remain a giving people. We continue to help and search for ways to support one another. As evidenced by our donors fulfilling each of the 7,847 "Letters to Santa "we received. This represents more than a 175% overall growth in our first 7 years! And the bottom line is that we have delivered over 70,000 gifts in total to some of urban America's most underserved children. We focus on basic needs, providing beds, comforters, pillows, desks, dressers and over 1,000 digital tablets, and refurbished laptops. Children can ask for three gifts: Something educational (tablet, books, art supplies, desks...etc), A toy or something they really want, and we encourage everyone to ask for something they or someone in their family really needs. SFAD receives letters with all personal information redacted 4. SFAD matches the child's gift request to the available on-line items 5. Donors read letters, buy gifts or simply donate by credit card at santaforaday.net 6. Retailer ships gifts to SFAD who wraps gifts, then delivers to Housing partners 7.
