About This Cause

Art+Feminism builds a community of activists that is committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts, beginning with Wikipedia. Art+Feminism’s central initiative is our annual edit-a-thon, a do-it-yourself and do-it-with-others campaign that teaches people of all gender identities and expressions worldwide to organize and edit Wikipedia. We provide edit-a-thon organizers with informational and limited financial resources, empowering them to create events that are meaningful and beneficial to their local communities while participating in a global movement. Augmenting the work of our annual campaign, Art+Feminism also leads and collaborates on Wikipedia-oriented research and community action initiatives. Since 2014, over 40,000 people at more than 1,700 events around the world have participated in our edit-a-thons, resulting in the creation and improvement of more than 370,000 articles in over 27 languages on Wikipedia and its sister projects. But statistics alone cannot convey our movement’s full impact. With each campaign cycle, we witness the transformative power of community organizing and knowledge sharing. Together, we are not only editing pages. We are shaping an internet that reflects diverse global histories of art-making, where communities who have most often been written out of history feel welcome and empowered to participate in writing (and righting) our stories.
