Mission Statement
Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA) exists to support the success of current and future LGBTQ+ medical students throughout their education and careers by fostering community and connecting members.
About This Cause
Founded in 2018, MSPA is a 501c3 non-profit advocacy and social organization committed to empowering current and prospective LGBTQIA+ medical students, increasing the number of physicians trained in LGBTQ-inclusive healthcare, and addressing the unique needs of queer communities through research, advocacy, education, and service. Our organization is run by students who volunteer their time in service of others. Since our initial team recruited 18 founding chapters at individual medical schools, we have rapidly expanded to nearly 100 chapters and more than 2000 members, including nearly 100 pre-medical students. Our National Leadership Team has grown to nearly 50 medical students and pre-medical student interns who have collectively made a significant impact on the LGBTQIA+ health workforce. MSPA has published seven peer reviewed journal articles related to LGBTQ+ health education. We have raised over $6,000 to be awarded to medical students as micro-scholarships and grants and partnered with MCAT prep companies to award scholarships to LGBTQ+ pre-medical students. We published the first LGBTQ+ Equity Report Card, scoring 36 medical schools’ support for LGBTQ+ students. Our activities are completely free to MSPA chapters and members. We are firm in our decision to not charge a membership fee for LGBTQ+ medical and premed students given the documented financial barriers the population faces. As a result, our organization’s income is driven solely by donations and grants. As we grow, these fundraising efforts have improved and become more successful, but the slow rate has certainly been a limiting factor at times as we continue to develop resources and programming for our members. Continuity of programming has been strongly driven by the dedicated members of our National Leadership Team. After nearly four years of persistence, MSPA is excited to have accomplished all that we have thus far and strive to continue our progress towards our goals of empowering upcoming generations of LGBTQIA+ physicians.
