Mission Statement
The mission of San Diego Community Birth Center is to provide evidence based, culturally sensitive reproductive health care to Birthing People from marginalized populations, focusing on Black Birthers, Women of Color, immigrants, LGBTQIA2+ and refugees.
About This Cause
Black women in the United States are 3 to 4 times more likely to die giving birth in a hospital setting. This is a statistic that is unique to the United States. Other developed nations have very different statistics. These are nations that integrate midwives into the normal healthcare structure. These are also nations that do not have such a recent, tangible history of enslavement, racism and ostracization of marginalized peoples. The goal and focus of San Diego Community Birth Center is to work in concert with the birthing community of San Diego and it's supporters, to provide evidence based, culturally sensitive, holistic reproductive healthcare options and resources to these communities. All the holistic care providers that have their individual practices under the umbrella of San Diego Community Birth Center identify as Black, Queer or as a Woman of Color or some combination thereof. Our care group include: an acupuncturist and Doctor of Ancient Chinese Medicine, a Licensed Midwife, a doula/birth assistant and childbirth educator, an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant and a nurse practitioner that provides outside monitoring for assistant/support of families with fertility challenges. Studies have shown that Birthing People have much BETTER outcomes and more positive experiences when they receive care from providers that have cultural similarity to their own, and the team at San Diego Community Birth Center are working hard toward that goal. In our first 18 months of operation, we have received a Proclamation from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors (March 1st is San Diego Community Birth Center day!), we've been awarded Business of the Year by Schedulicity, and we partner with San Diego Co-Harvest, providing space for sustainable organic farming on the birth center property, the Healthy Start Program that exists within the Global Communities sphere of service, providing supplemental midwifery care to Black mothers and low-income families. We'll be at a table at San Diego Pride again this year, talking to our LGBTQ families about family building, talking to our trans-male brothers about getting their Pap tests with our midwife, at SheFest a part of San Diego Pride that focuses on Lady Loving Ladies, and offering our time to the Alliance For African Assistance Clinic to see the Afghan refugees that are being newly settled in San Diego. All of these families feel loved, empowered, cared for and supported through this most unique and special journey by our team, our community partners and the generous donations provided to us by our communities, and people like you.
