To bring calm to the mind, joy to the heart, and connection to community through an art enrichment program. We do this through a program of simple movements and creative expression through guided painting.

About This Cause

How We Help: We travel to schools, facilities, organizations and private homes in the Greater Cincinnati area. We also offer sessions at our office location in Anderson Township. Program Overview: The need for AWI was experienced first-hand by our founder, an artist, whose father was living with the life-altering decline of Alzheimer’s. Through research she discovered a win-win combination of movement and art that has demonstrated improvements in mood, communication, dexterity, balance and stability. Step 1 | EASE First, we present a non-intimidating and fun process to ease the artist into the format. The primary movements and brush strokes are simple and gentle midline crossing actions, similar to motions widely used by occupational therapists and practitioners of tai chi. Midline crossing is the ability to move one’s hands and eyes in a coordinated fashion crossing the invisible midline that separates the left and right side of the body. This affects the brain by causing the right hemisphere to have to communicate with the left hemisphere. While AWI makes no scientific claim about its programs, midline crossing is an intentional component of our program design. Step 2 | EXPRESSION The process can vary depending on the individual or group, but the signature piece of the AWI program is the simple guided-painting technique that allows for individual creative expression. The first step of every painting begins with midline crossing motions. Fans of our art will recognize the trademark left and right brush strokes that make up the background of each painting. Step 3 | CONFIDENCE When the painting is complete, we celebrate, we welcome applause from others and we take pictures for keepsakes. The results leave the AWI student with an immediate sense of confidence. Ask anyone who has witnessed our program in action. The feelings of pride, joy and a sense of accomplishment are well documented. Step 4 |CONNECTION The finished artwork can be a profound sense of connection to community which can be sorely lacking for many of our students. Their unique work can be a fundamental opportunity to bond with and express themselves to their family, friends and the community around them. Art shows, exhibits and auctions can offer another and rare opportunity for our artists to feel pride and belonging in their community. • What Have We Been Up To? Since 2014 the AWI program has been utilized in a number of different schools and facilities, in many private homes and onsite at our Anderson Township location. We have exhibited at multiple art shows, including The Summit hotel, Summerfair at Coney Island, and Affair of the Arts in Anderson where work from one of our autistic students won Best in Show. • What Are Others Saying about AWI? “You’ve done more with Emily in four sessions than we’ve seen in four years.” -Lou, parent of autistic student “Art with Intention has changed my daughter’s life. She has autism (non-verbal) and now she expresses herself through art. She absolutely loves doing art with Miss Patti.” – Gigi Louise, parent of autistic student “Art with Intention made a HUGE difference in my mom’s life when she had Alzheimer’s and it trickled down to our entire family. Never an artist, she loved painting and was so proud of the art she created.”– Tina Mooney, daughter of Alzheimer’s student
