About This Cause
Mitchell's House is a project of Mitchell's Fund. It is a safe place offering counseling and play therapy services to children with life threatening illnesses, their siblings and parents, regardless of their ability to pay. Mitchell's House fills a gap in services. It is the first-of-its-kind non-profit counseling center in the United States to focus on children and families facing medical trauma. When a child is diagnosed, medical trauma impacts the entire family. Our licensed clinicians help sick children build resilience, which helps them cope and engage better with treatment. They also give siblings and parents a safe place to process feelings and learn skills to persevere. The children who are Mitchell's House clients have an illness requiring multiple major surgeries, multiple hospital stays, regular infusions and/or multiple specialty medical visits and reduces the child's life expectancy and/or is life threatening. This includes cancer diagnoses, rare genetic disorders, cardiac conditions, sickle cell disease. When a child is the patient, it is important to serve the whole family because they all are caregivers. Our referrals for clients come from social workers at Kids Path, the pediatric hospice service line of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Charlotte Region, Levine Children's, Hemby Children's Hospital and the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic at Novant. A Mom of a three-year-old with a terminal rare disease said it best "Counseling from Mitchell's House is a life raft for families like mine who are caring for their sick child. My counselor helped me prepare for my daughter's death. I was able to share how afraid I was and talk about things I could do to survive." Mitchell’s House has a skilled team of licensed therapists experienced and trained in grief, trauma, play therapy, school based and crisis response, who deliver services to our sick children and families.
