Mission Statement
Rebuilding lives and hope through meaningful work for adults living with mental illness
About This Cause
Adults living with mental illness are some of the most vulnerable and marginalized populations and are especially vulnerable and at risk experiencing far larger disparities, inequalities and lower socioeconomic status. People living with mental illness often face a larger number of barriers to employment, education and housing. This year has been devastating as people living with a mental illness have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Oregon has the highest prevalence of mental illness in the nation and ranks 49th in outcomes (based on latest mental health America Report). As a state we can do better, and Corvallis is leading by example. This is why Pathfinder Clubhouse opened in Corvallis to make a difference for people living with mental illness. Pathfinder Clubhouse is a radically different program with impactful results. Built off an International evidenced based model that doesn’t just treat patients or clients. Each person who joins PC becomes a member; a member of a vibrant and thriving community. PC is a program built to empower each member giving a voice and choice in their own journey often for the first time. PC is a voluntary program at no cost to the individual that builds confidence, skills and hope in an organic way that empowers women to work side-by-side as colleagues with staff and other members to accomplish meaningful and purposeful work of the clubhouse. Members choose how they want to utilize the program by choosing with whom they work with and what they want to work on. They are not just simply shown how to enter bills into QuickBooks or write checks, they are put into the drivers’ seat and together side-by-side with staff learn transferable employable skills. All of the work of the clubhouse is completed by member and staff together from writing grants to cleaning bathrooms side-by-side. But all of the work done in a clubhouse is with a purpose to help each person overcome the barriers they are facing in their own lives. Mirroring a work-ordered day, everything in the clubhouse is intentional with task designed to build skills, self-worth, self-esteem and confidence. PC is intentionally understaffed, so the staff have to be talent scouts looking to bring out the potential in each person in order to complete the work of the day. Each member is wanted, needed and expected often for the first time. Through performing different tasks and by accomplishing different projects needed by the clubhouse, members organically build healthy relationships, build skills and learn how to remove barriers to employment, education, housing, socialization, wellness while building life skills. Clubhouse in Medford has proven to reduce hospitalizations by 96% within the first year of membership through a study performed by Asante Rogue Regional Medical Centers Behavioral Health Unit.
