Mission Statement

M-II-M Betterways Day Habilitation to provide a program that is tailored for and delivered to individuals who may not have the skills to enter the normal workforce, and who may require assistance with daily living and social skills, by focusing on three skill sets: Daily Living Skills: People with intellectual disability are more likely than their age-related peers to need extra support to carry out everyday activities. Social Skills: skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language and our personal appearance. Work Related Basic Skills: tasks related to vocational skills.

About This Cause

M-II-M Betterways Day Habilitation was created by families in Brazoria County with special needs kids; specifically our community has grown 26.3 percent over the last six years we have identified a need for a unique Day Habilitation program to provide a bridge for special-needs older teens and young adults as they transition out of the school/home care environment to become active, engaged citizens of the community. Day Habilitation programs are a way to provide people with developmental disabilities the extra care each person requires while moving toward independence and self-reliability. More than 80% of adults with autism are currently living with their parents, and the extra time, money, and attention they need often taxes family members beyond their abilities. M-II-M Betterways Day Habilitation is a unique program for older teens and young adults with special needs which focus on helping to achieve greater confidence and self-sufficiency and success as independent, productive members of society, through programs that emphasizes skills for daily living, modified job training, employment in fields where they can thrive, as well as participation in community activities events. Our research into the older teens and young adults who have aged out of the school system identified two areas of concern regarding them exiting one system and entering another. Specifically, the individuals we targeted normally go to a day habilitation program or the parent(s) will incorporate the adult child into their daily routines the problem with those choices are most day habilitation centers lack programs that are age appropriate instead of targeting the individual’s strengths and weaknesses to create a program and environment designed to help them to thrive the centers normally create a child nursery habitat where these young adults regress. The concern with the parent(s) incorporating the young adult into their daily routine is the lack of peer interaction and social skills. Mainly, this is another form of regression it mirrors a parent of a preschooler who takes that child around adult friends, and adult environments only, the young child is often sat to the side with some sort of toy, electrical device, etc. Just as it is important for young kids to be with other kids their age it is important for individuals with IDD to be in an environment with their peers when they age out of the school system. Our program focus on working with the businesses in the community to allow us to provide work that is considered non-essential in the daily course of the day but is in fact a necessity for the overall health of a business, for example document shredding, preparing small package returns, and simply coding are generally labor-intensive, but routine work efforts that can be completed at our location. The benefits of having those types of work tasks performed at our location is it protects our clients from being misused, bullied, and manipulated in the normal workforce by employees of the businesses. We have heard the horror stories where individuals with IDD are assigned to the high turnover work areas to be paired with the employees who are considered underachievers, by having the work in our location we can ensure our clients can be safe as they become productive, engaged, and contributing members to the community and economy.
