About This Cause

Land & Ladle is a mission-driven organization focused on building and promoting a more communal, sustainable, and equitable food system through unique experiences, education, storytelling, and technology. Our programs and efforts revolve around four main focus areas: Sustainable Food The future of our planet depends on sustainable food. Sustainable food innovations from alternative proteins and packaging to food waste reduction can help make our food system more sustainable and resilient. Equitable Food Healthy food is a human right. Food has the power to uplift communities economically and socially, so we support innovative ways to ensure all people have the opportunity to eat healthfully and participate in the food economy. Functional Food Food is medicine. The link between mental and physical well being and food is clear, but research on personalized and functional foods is nascent. We aim to accelerate innovation for the betterment of human health. Communal Food Food brings people together. It can help foster understanding, teach traditions, celebrate culture and strengthen communities. We help people grow, harvest and eat food together through unique experiences. Our Regional Focus We are focusing our attention initially on the Sacramento and Yolo region because we believe that this region, with its proximity to farms, the farm-to-fork capital: Sacramento and the top minds in food and agriculture at the University of California at Davis, has all the ingredients to lead the way in building sustainable, equitable, and communal food systems. The Yolo and Sacramento region is primed to lead California. California often leads the nation in environmental change, which in turn leads the globe. So while we focus locally, we aim for a global impact. We will engage with experts and partners from other regions and countries as needed to build exceptional educational, marketing and event programming. The types of work we do: Educational Programs: We work on educational programming within our community, which includes everything from sustainable food classes like beeswax cloth making to limit plastic use in the kitchen, to larger scale conferences and summits on food waste and food waste innovation, highlighting the work of academics and leaders in the space. Our goal is to partially fund educational activities with grants. Projects by time frame: Past projects. Classes to limit plastic use in the kitchen in partnership with Davis Food Co-op. Development and assistance in creating a sustainable/local food cooking program for the Davis Farm to School organization in partnership with the Davis Food Co-op. In the year of 2018 this resulted in a 3rd Grade cooking, tasting and Co-op field trip program called Little Chefs. 10 field trip opportunities were offered to third grade classes in the Davis Joint Unified School System. Present projects: We are developing an event series to celebrate and educate the public on sustainable and equitable food, highlighting leaders and academics in the space. Future projects: We will launch a Food Waste Entrepreneurship Summit and community building program in 2020 with University of California Natural Resources and The UCD Food Waste Collaborative as programming partners. Community Organizing and Events: We also work on expanding people’s interest in sustainable, equitable, functional and communal foods. We do this via online community building, organizing groups for input and action, and communal events that bring people together around food, often with an educational component. Past projects. Davis Food & Economic Development (FED) Discussion Series and Report Development: Land & Ladle has acted as a lead organizer for an effort to make sustainable, equitable, and communal food a central economic driver for the city of Davis and the surrounding region. At the end of 2018 we (with other individual co-organizers) brought 30 local leaders (many working in the food and agriculture sectors) in Davis, California together to discuss the potential of food and agriculture in Davis. From these meetings the co-organizers, including Land & Ladle, with the input from all participants, crafted a recommendation to the City of Davis which was presented and received favorably by The Davis City Council. City staff will now work with Land & Ladle and the community group we continue to organize to draft an implementation plan around the 5 key action areas of the report: make Davis region a living laboratory for sustainable food, access to healthy food for all, make Davis and the region a center for Agtech and FoodTech innovation, make Davis and the region a center for creative food entrepreneurship, and develop a brand and narrative for Davis within a regional campaign. Ladies of Land & Ladle Community Organizing: Land & Ladle has been the organizer of Ladies of Land & Ladle an offline and online community that provides a platform for information sharing and support for women working in or interested in sustainable agriculture and food. We organize in-person events that have been well attended and received great feedback. Several of those involved are part of a Facebook group that continues to keep members informed and connected. Davis Eats Communal Food Gathering Series: Land & Ladle is the co-organizer for Davis Eats, an event series that brings people together around food and art. We aim to build a better food culture in Davis through these events. Our first Davis Eats event was for 70 people at a local winery. The event was almost no-waste, and we used local products. By doing this, we aim to teach people about sustainable food practices, connecting people more deeply to their food and helping them understand the environmental and economic impacts of their food choices. Present projects: Davis Food & Economic Development Implementation Plan with City of Davis: Land & Ladle is the organizing body for the future work to help drive forward the five action areas identified in the FED report through marketing, convening, research, report development and organizing. Ladies of Land & Ladle is still active on Facebook and we moderate that group. Cali Rice Festival Educational Programming and Event Production: Land & Ladle will be the educational programming partner for the first-ever Cali Rice Festival on Oct 4-7, 2019. We are organizing cooking demonstrations as well as panels and fireside chats with academics, farmers, chefs, and food educators. This is part of an effort to bring the amazing food, agriculture and habitat knowledge on UC Davis campus into the community in a way that is accessible and fun. Future projects: We plan to expand on the Ladies of Land and Ladle community-building, putting on more events, highlighting and sharing the work of these women leaders. We are working on expanding Land & Ladle events programming to include meet-ups and panels for anyone interested in food and agriculture. We plan to continue to be the organizing body that supports the city in pushing the Food & Economic Development for Davis vision as identified in the report written and presented to Davis City Council in early 2019. We plan to expand on Davis Eats communal food gatherings to support different themes and perhaps incorporate more educational content, art and cultural information. Marketing, Storytelling & Outreach Almost all of the work we do requires outreach and marketing. We have a website and social media accounts that we use to actively communicate about our programs and educate the public on sustainable, equitable, functional and communal food. Past and on-going projects: We currently manage a number of social media accounts for Land & Ladle, Davis Eats, and Giving Garden, as well as two websites (landandladle.com and givinggarden.io). Giving Garden has content for people interested in growing their own food and promotes produce sharing and donating to reduce food waste. We work hard to market and promote the great work happening in the community around sustainable, equitable and communal food and to highlight insightful and educational stories from around the world. Future projects: We have a goal to expand the Land & Ladle website into a digital media destination with resources and stories, highlighting the leaders and efforts in the sustainable and equitable food space first with a local focus, then nationally and globally. Technology Development Land & Ladle manages Giving Garden, an app that helps people grow food based on their microclimate. We also provide information on what to do with produce and the resources available for growing, sharing and donating food. Past and on-going projects: Development and maintenance of GivingGarden.io and the Giving Garden apps available in the U.S. for android and iOS phones. Future projects: We plan to continue to update the app to have better recommendations on microclimate growing We will be importing more useful data for app users, like food pantries nearby and other local food information We hope to expand the GivingGarden.io website to have more useful content for local food system and gardening enthusiasts. Land & Ladle dedicates equal time to marketing, events, community development and technology development and plans to gain funding through grants, event sponsorships, ticket sales and possible membership or subscription fees.
