Mission Statement

The Urban Native Collective exists to preserve and represent the culture and heritage of Native American, Indigenous, and First Nations people; to provide education, advocacy, and support on contemporary Indigenous issues and cultivate knowledge about Native American history in local and regional communities.

About This Cause

Urban Native Collective (UNC), is a grassroots collective empowering Indigenous communities in the Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana region. We are the largest, most representative urban Indigenous collective in the region. Our origin story has its roots in land and culture: While we’ve been organizing in the region for decades, the nonprofit officially formed in 2018 when the City of Cincinnati worked with Indigenous leadership to change the myth of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Programming: Podcast- Hosted by Briana Mazzolini Blanchard and Homer Shadowheart, Life on the Margins: An Urban Native Experience is a podcast centering the Indigenous perspective. Wellness and Fitness- UNC offers comprehensive mental health support to Indigenous Women, Women of color, Two-Spirit, and Non-binary relatives, as well as free access to partnering climbing and fitness facilities for Indigenous and migrant community members. Food Sovereignty- Urban Native Collective works to reclaim urban spaces to grow and distribute foods and medicines for Indigenous community members. Indigenous People's Day- Every year UNC host a three-day celebration, coupled with a multi- week gallery show in October that celebrates the arts, culture, and heritage of Native and Indigenous peoples throughout the region. Lending Library- UNC’s Lending Library is housed in the Native Sovereignty Center in the neighborhood of Northside in Cincinnati. The library exists to provide free, public access to books and resources about Indigenous peoples, and to foster cultural preservation, education, and community engagement. Ohio Land Initiative- Through the Ohio Land Initiative, the UNC seeks to establish a broader platform to promote Indigenous perspectives on sacred sites, encourage land rematriation efforts, and assert Native sovereignty as foundational to some of the region’s most important natural resources and public spaces.
