Newburgh Urban Farm and Food, Inc.(NUFFI) empowers residents working together to build a just and resilient food system that improves the environment and the health of the community in the City of Newburgh.
About This Cause
Newburgh Urban Farm and Food, Inc. is as a not-for-profit organization in the City of Newburgh NY that focuses on: 1) Growing fresh, healthy produce for City of Newburgh residents; 2) Distributing produce to feeding programs and soup kitchens in the City; 3) Aggregating produce from local farms, gardens and feeding programs helping to reduce food waste; 4) Educating and Employing Newburgh residents and youth; and 5) Supporting the development of community gardens. NUFFI’s programs include: • The Downing Park Urban Farm (DPUF) a 2-acre community-based farm that is a model for urban growing techniques using organic practices. DPUF features growing in lined, raised beds to prevent contamination from urban soils; and in-ground no-till “carbon farming”. • A City-Wide Food Donation Program, connects both community and residential gardens with Newburgh feeding programs, and tracks the amount of produce donated to the programs. The program provides Newburgh residents who are food insecure, access to healthy fresh produce, and reduces food waste by facilitating community and residential gardens and the DPUF, a way to distribute their produce to local feeding programs. • Youth Education and Employment Program provides City of Newburgh youth opportunities for a safe and nurturing environment where they are encouraged to develop hard and soft employment skills, build their leadership skills, and create personal connections to the food system and concept of social justice. • Community Gardens throughout the City – NUFFI assists residents and community organizations to install community gardens. • Annual Newburgh Urban Farming Fair is an annual free outdoor event celebrating urban farming/gardening with exhibits, how-to demonstrations, children’s activities, and vendors.
