About This Cause
OABSE (Now ORABSE) was founded in 1975. We served Portland Metro only. We are now expanding to be an alliance that first and foremost unites all educators, PreK through higher education, from across the state that are of African descent. We plan to support our members through professional development, advocacy, leadership conferences, career support, affinity-based gatherings, and networking events. We need additional funds to contract grant writers and speakers. We have hosted Student Awards Banquets for over 30 years, acknowledging middle school and high school students. Seven to eight scholarships are awarded each year to the high school seniors. Our board members have always donated the funds to cover the scholarships. Last year the scholarships were $700 each. We want to award at least $2000 to each student in 2021. We would also like to increase the number of scholarships and include students who are already attending college. Due to COVID-19, many students did not have summer jobs or winter break jobs. ORABSE is the only organization that focuses on supporting and serving Black educators by providing professional development, curriculum support, advocacy and career support, leadership and education conferences, affinity-based gatherings, and networking events One of the objectives of the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) is to recruit and retain teachers and administrators of color. We know that Black teachers leave teaching at a higher rate than white teachers.(Google Black teachers leave schools at a higher rate) and Black teachers need a strong climate) We need our current Black Educators to stay in Oregon and we need to increase the overall number of educators that identify as Black or African American. As we grow our membership we will continue to build relationships with state agencies and districts to accomplish these outcomes by partnering with various “grow your own” and “pipeline” initiatives happening around the state. We will partner with higher education institutions and school districts to ensure our educators receive professional development units and/or credits for their participation. We be visible and vocal when it comes to educating our children.
