Mission Statement

Amigos is a nonprofit organization that unites our community to promote education, charity, and multicultural appreciation.

About This Cause

The purpose of Amigos Community Center is to promote education, charity, and multicultural appreciation through programs for individuals of all ages and families, especially from marginalized and underserved groups. Currently, most of Amigos’ beneficiary population reside in the counties of Montgomery and Bucks, as well as the Northeast Philadelphia area, in Pennsylvania. Amigos was created to address a shortage of culturally sensitive resources and to help our marginalized population access them. In August 2019, Amigos Community Center was officially incorporated as a charitable, non-profit organization in Pennsylvania. Amigos is currently headquartered at 300 S York Rd; Hatboro PA 19040 and it partners with churches and/or local organizations to secure space for its programs. Amigos Community Center serves its community through an After-School Program, the Anawim Latin Music School, GED/Adult Basic Education classes, and Family Empowerment Workshops. Our After-School Program provides students from Kindergarten to 6th Grade with small-group tutoring and a safe space so they can develop their academic and social skills. The program primarily serves students from “historically underperforming” groups as defined by the PA Department of Education: “economically disadvantaged, English Language Learners, and/or students with disabilities.” The after-school program is conducted four days per week, and it is offered at no cost to the students or their families. The Anawim Latin Music School offers children and teens the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. This program currently offers small-group instruction in guitar, percussion, piano, and trumpet and can accept up to 80 students. Enrollment is open to students aged 7 to 18 years old, however preference is given to children and teens from low-income households, marginalized social groups, and/or those who have suffered an adverse childhood experience, such as trauma. Amigos also offers GED and Adult Basic Education courses in Spanish. This program is offered to Spanish-speaking adults who have not obtained a high school diploma. As a program for working adults, classes meet once per week during three, 12-week semesters per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer). Because the percentage of Latinos without a high school diploma in Montgomery County is 25.1% (US Census Bureau, 2017), the GED and Adult Basic Education program in Spanish is crucial to reduce this educational gap in our community. Finally, Amigos offers Family Empowerment Workshops focusing on home economics, wellness, and mental health, as well as psychological and legal counseling. These educational opportunities are primarily aimed to families of low-income and/or ethnic/racial minority backgrounds, as well as single parents living in our area. Workshops are offered free of charge, once or twice per month. These workshops raise social equity in our community by promoting wellbeing practices and giving families of vulnerable groups access to mental health and legal resources.
