Mission Statement
Our mission is to empower California youth to combat Childhood Obesity through various sports training programs and nutritional guidance.
About This Cause
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 12.7 million children and adolescents in the United States between the ages of 2 and 19 suffer from obesity. In addition to this, many children, including those residing in our community, suffer from what were once considered adult co-morbidities. Among these are type II diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and hyperlipidemia, to name a few, with obesity considered to be the most common chronic condition of childhood. The resulting impact on the healthcare system, the cost of caring for eventual complications, and related morbidity and mortality is alarming. Momentum Youth Sports Training is a public charity/ 501c3 organization that is emerging as a lead resource and activity center for youth who are disproportionately affected by obesity, diabetes, and other conditions that are directly related to lack of exercise, poor nutrition and eating habits, environmental stressors, and genetic predispositions. Our organization focuses on physical activity and proper nutrition as a mechanism to improve children's overall health and well-being in hopes that they will maintain positive health behaviors into adulthood and therefore experience a positive long-term quality of life. Our target population is low-income minority children, mainly Hispanic, African American, and Pacific Islander because they are disproportionately affected by childhood obesity compared to their White counterparts. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2019, Pomona, California, was approximately 72 percent Hispanic, 10 percent Asian, and 6 percent African American, with about a third of the city's population under 18. Twenty-two percent of Pomona children lived in poverty, higher than 94 percent of American neighborhoods. Pomona also suffered from violent crime, which was 30 percent higher than the national average. Our constituency directly reflects the city, where finding a safe place to exercise is a challenge. Community-driven programs have positively affected local citizens by addressing issues that influenced their health behavior. Momentum Youth Sports Training encourages neighborhood participation in our events, as many local adults suffer from obesity. We will continue to educate our community on the long and short-term effects of inactivity and poor nutrition, raise awareness of health issues surrounding sedentary lifestyles among children, and serve as a haven and conduit for the youth's personal, physical, and emotional development.
