Mission Statement

BlackSpace demands a present and future where Black people, Black spaces, and Black culture matter and thrive. We break the silos of urbanist practices to build Black power and Black joy. Our Collective collaboratively creates Neighborhood Strategy projects, Customized Learning workshops, and Urbanist experiences that center Black public life. We are Black urban planners, architects, artists, activists, designers, and leaders working to protect and create Black spaces. Our work includes a range of activities from engagement and projects in historically Black neighborhoods to hosting cross-disciplinary convenings and events. We push ourselves, our partners, our fields, and our work closer to these ideals so we may realize a present and future where Black people, Black spaces, and Black culture matter and thrive.

About This Cause

We Manifest Black Futures. Neighborhood Strategy projects allow us to work at a neighborhood level to co-create spaces that affirm and amplify Black presence in public life. Our approach to community visioning and development starts with listening. Throughout the process, we prioritize co-creation, reflection, and moving at the speed of trust. We share our practices and Manifesto through Customized Learning workshops that provoke new ways of protecting Black culture in the built environment. Participants walk away with new values, strategies, and connections for ethical design processes. Our facilitators have extensive experience and deep knowledge of the Manifesto principles and how to apply them practically. We collaborate with Black organizers and thinkers to co-create Urbanist Experiences that inspire the creation of Black futures. These bespoke experiences unite Black urbanists across disciplines to share new ways to center Blackness in architecture, design, and urban planning. “BlackSpace’s values, as outlined in the BlackSpace Manifesto, are rooted in Black liberation. While there is no fixed path or standard set of principles for achieving Black liberation, BlackSpace has determined specific instances when it will not accept donations… BlackSpace will not accept donations from…[an entity] when…[it] benefits from or perpetuates Present-Day Direct Harm against Black people and Black communities—and has failed to take reparative action to rectify the harm…actively supports, participates in, and/or benefits from the prison industrial complex...profits from Present-Day Predatory Lending…has historically created and/or contributed to the production of products and services that are detrimental to the physical health and wellbeing of Black people…has a history and is known to be Problematic and despite knowing so, neither the individual, entity, nor identified entity leaders have taken accountability for the Problematic behavior, nor made any changes to indicate a desire in doing so [or] has not historically supported Black organizations; however as a result of the social climate, the entity has now decided to support Black organizations in order to improve its image and to benefit from doing so.”
