Mission Statement
Harvest for the Hungry is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization fighting for those who struggle with hunger. Located in Freeport, Texas, we are located on 61 acres, where we grow fresh fruits and vegetables to give to the hungry at no cost year round.
About This Cause
Harvest for the Hungry became incorporated in May of 2019 and received its 501(c)(3) status in October of 2019. Through a generous donation, an individual aligned with the mission of the organization to provide free, year-round healthy farm to table food to those in need. Purchased in November of 2019, the Harvest for the Hungry property became the home for a bold, new initiative. The Harvest for the Hungry vision is for those in need to have an experiential and educational visit to the farm. Those in need will have the opportunity to harvest fruits and vegetables themselves, learn about the trees and plants, the nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables, and how to prepare the fruits and vegetables they harvest. Our goal is for an experiential visit that allows for educating, enabling, and equipping those that come to the farm. Instead of giving them food, we aim to help those who help themselves. We believe feeding people physically is a platform for feeding people spiritually. Because we have a lake and pond on the property (approximately 27 acres), we have stocked the fresh water areas with fish (channel catfish, bass, blue gill and sun fish). Thanks to a generous grant from Bass Pro, the water will also be used for an experiential opportunity for those in need to learn how to fish, learn about the fish, the nutritional value of the fish, and how to prepare the fish they catch. We have 450+ fruit trees, including: apple, apricot, avocado, banana, fig, kumquat, lemon, lime, loquat, nectarine, orange, peach, pear, persimmon, pomegranate, and tangerine. We also have 3 green houses (24’ x 96’), where we are growing: beats, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, kale, lettuce, mustard greens, onions, peppers, potatoes, spinach, squash, and tomatoes. The carefully selected fruit and vegetable choices will enable the Harvest for the Hungry farm to produce fruits and vegetables year-round versus harvested in 2-3 months of the year. By partnering with food distribution programs, nutrition education and public benefits assistance in Texas, we focus on building a farm-to-table solution for the needy in Texas. Every year, Harvest for the Hungry will secure thousands of pounds of food that will go to local communities and partners that serve the needy in Brazoria County. Our work helps ensure that healthy food makes it to the tables of thousands of families struggling with hunger.
