EQUITY AND TRANSFORMATION

Chicago, Illinois, 60616 United States

Mission Statement

The mission at Equity and Transformation (EAT) is to build social and economic equity for Black workers engaged in the informal economy.

About This Cause

The Goal of our Guaranteed Income (GI) pilot project is to provide 100 system involved African Americans age 17-24, from Chicago’s West Garfield Park Neighborhood, a GI of 500 USD per month for 12 months. The income will be distributed monthly through prepaid debit cards that are issued in each recipient’s name. Since the income is “guaranteed,” there are no work requirements or restrictions on how the money can be spent. The purpose of the GI program is to establish a sustainable alternative to the costly and problematic prison industrial complex. There are currently 47,622 people in prison in Illinois and the average cost of their confinement is $33,507 per year. It is anticipated that 96 percent of Illinois prisoners will eventually be released. Seventeen percent will reoffend within a year, while 43 percent will reoffend within three years. In 2016, Illinois saw 71,551 new convictions; of those, 70,610, or 89 percent, were reoffenders headed back to prison. We believe our GI pilot program will fare much better results as it relates to cost and recidivism rates.
