Mission Statement
Together with our compassionate community, we will end pet homelessness and animal suffering.
About This Cause
Humane Colorado (formerly the Dumb Friends League) established in 1910, is a national leader in animal welfare. The organization advocates for animals and the people who care for them through compassionate care and support services. Their initiatives extend beyond sheltering, focusing on life-saving services, connecting families with homeless animals, and addressing barriers to pet ownership. Additionally, they emphasize enhancing the human-animal bond and innovative solutions to tackle contemporary challenges in animal welfare. Each year, Humane Colorado receives more than 47,000 vulnerable animals across their facilities. Extending beyond providing shelter, care, and adoption services for homeless pets and horses, their commitment to ending pet homelessness and animal suffering includes: • Three companion animal shelters in Denver, Castle Rock, and Alamosa, Colorado. More than 343,781 nights of safety were provided to animals in their care in the last fiscal year. • A rehabilitation and adoption center for equines in Franktown, Colorado, which has cared for nearly 2,300 vulnerable equines since 2012. • Humane Colorado's Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur in Denver, which provides access to donor-subsidized urgent veterinary services for owned pets whose families cannot afford care served 7,045 pets last year. • A low-cost community cat spay/neuter clinic for owned and community pets in Denver served 12,546 pets last year. • A mobile pet wellness team that provides low-cost vaccinations, microchips and other basic pet necessities for underserved community members in the Denver metropolitan area served 7,254 pets last year. Their work across these facilities advances the lifesaving mission, ensuring the best outcomes for homeless and neglected animals, while also allowing owned pets to remain in loving homes when their owners are facing challenges—helping to stop the cycle of pet homelessness before it starts. For more than 40 years, Humane Colorado has also offered innovative, curriculum-based education programs that deliver messages of compassion and respect to more than 12,000 people annually. Most of these Humane Education programs are free and held in public school classrooms throughout the Denver area—with a goal of fostering a society where animals are valued, animal welfare is understood, and compassion and empathy toward animals and humans alike is universal.
