Mission Statement

Together with our compassionate community, we will end pet homelessness and animal suffering.

About This Cause

For more than 100 years, the Dumb Friends League has served as a trusted community resource in our home state of Colorado. Since our founding in 1910, we have grown to be the most comprehensive provider of direct services to Colorado pets in need. Each year, the Dumb Friends League receives more than 21,000 animals across our facilities. We proudly practice Socially Conscious Sheltering, and we maintain one of the highest live release rates in the country, placing 100% of healthy, safe and social cats, dogs and horses. We turn no animal away, and we rely solely upon community support to accomplish this work. Extending beyond providing shelter, care, and adoption services for homeless pets and horses, our commitment to ending pet homelessness and animal suffering includes: • Addressing pet overpopulation via free and low-cost community spay and neuter programs; • Offering free and low-cost vaccination clinics in underserved ZIP codes; • Offering behavior and training programs for both homeless and owned pets; • Providing affordable veterinary care to pet owners in need via our Solutions-Veterinary Hospital; • Investigating cases of cruelty and abuse state-wide via the Colorado Humane Society, a Dumb Friends League program; • Teaching lessons about the importance of treating animals and people with kindness and respect. Our facilities include shelters in Denver, Castle Rock and Alamosa; the Harmony Equine Center in Franktown; and the Solutions–Cat Spay/Neuter Clinic and Solutions–Veterinary Hospital in Denver. The Dumb Friends League also operates one of the oldest shelter-based education departments in the country, providing unique, curriculum-based learning opportunities for more than 45 years. In our last fiscal year, our Humane Education programs served more than 15,000 children and adults, most offered at no cost. These lessons connect issues of animal welfare with character development and skill-building, all while reinforcing the fundamental link between pets and healthy, safe communities.
