About This Cause
The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is to empower every Club member, through safe and impactful experiences, to: graduate high school with a plan for college or career, contribute to their community and live a healthy life. In 1961, a group of local citizens opened the doors of the first "Boys Club of Denver" to young men who needed a safe, positive place to spend their free time. Located in an old warehouse, the original Club wasn't fancy and it didn't have a complex agenda. Instead, led by just two caring adult staff members, the Club focused on the same thing that underpins its work today - providing a space where young people could find the hope and opportunity that might otherwise go missing in their lives. The Club immediately became a necessary and beloved institution in the community: over 800 young men joined the Club during that first year of operation. Today, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver (BGCMD) serves over 11,500 young men and women between the ages of 6 and 18 at seventeen different locations throughout the metro Denver area. Today's Clubs build upon the organization's cornerstone of positive character development to fulfill their mission of inspiring and enabling young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as caring, productive and responsible citizens. However, in light of the increasingly complex challenges that today's young people face in their quest to succeed, the Clubs have evolved to meet the needs of each local community that they serve with targeted, high-impact programs and activities. From homework help, to service learning, to robotics, to team sports, everything that goes on at the Clubs is designed to capitalize on the "out-of-school" time in order to help kids make measurable gains in three key areas: academic achievement and career readiness, character and leadership ability, and health and life skills. Each Club is a dedicated youth-specific space staffed by trained youth development professionals whose guidance and consistent presence in the community helps to attract, retain and positively impact thousands of Club members each year. These professionals and the programs they run, inside the safe, fun, family-like environment of the Club, represent a tried-and-true approach to supporting and developing the young people who need us most. Goals: BGCMD has learned that for the members who need us most, the more often they attend the Clubs and the more they participate in our carefully-designed programming, the greater their chance of succeeding in their schools, in their communities, and in their lives. Each year, therefore, we set goals to increase the following outputs as the most basic indicators of our importance to and impact on the community: 1.) the number of young people who join the Clubs, 2.) the number of the number of program hours that we deliver to those members, and 3.) the number of members who participate in those Club activities at least once every week. In targeting these increases in attendance, program dosage, and retention, we affect positive change for our young Club members by increasing their knowledge, skills and practiced behaviors in three key outcome areas: academic success, character, and healthy lifestyles. Over the long term, our goal is to improve academic achievement and career readiness, strengthen character and develop leadership ability, and increase healthy attitudes and behaviors for every young person who regularly attends our Clubs and participates in our programming.
