Mission Statement

The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado & Wyoming leads the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives. The organization works to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences; to improve how people with epilepsy are perceived, accepted and valued in society; and to promote research for a cure. We are a non-profit, charitable agency, designated as a 501 (c) 3 organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible as allowed by law.

About This Cause

We are the leader in connecting, educating, and empowering to improve the lives of everyone affected by epilepsy. We connect people to healthcare providers, support networks, and a listening ear. We educate schools, employers, and the community at large to reduce stigma and raise awareness. And we empower people affected by epilepsy with knowledge, resources, and advocacy to live their best lives. For more than 50 years, we have remained committed to our mission, and we will not rest until we achieve a world free from seizures. When her grandchild was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1964, Dr. Harriot Hunter incorporated the Colorado Epilepsy Association to provide support services to youth with epilepsy. Working out of her basement, Dr. Hunter and a group of dedicated volunteers began providing counseling and support to those impacted by epilepsy, while also educating the public about seizure disorders. As the organization grew, through the addition of permanent staff, the Association became affiliated with the National Epilepsy Foundation and rebranded to The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado. This pivotal relationship expanded our capacity to share critical resources while ensuring our fiscal independence and identity as a nonprofit serving the needs of individuals and families living with epilepsy in Colorado. In 2020, the Foundation expanded its service area to include the state of Wyoming. We look forward to bringing programs and services to people living with epilepsy in Wyoming, and to raising awareness through fundraising events and community outreach. We are also actively working with the Spanish-speaking communities in our region to provide services for a historically underserved population. In the decades since our founding, we have earned a reputation of providing advocacy, programming, resource development, and educational tools for both people living with epilepsy as well as those who serve this community through caregiving and healthcare.
