Mission Statement

The National Association of Counsel for Children advances children’s and parents’ rights by supporting a diverse, inclusive community of child welfare lawyers to provide zealous legal representation and by advocating for equitable, anti-racist solutions co-designed by people with lived experience.

About This Cause

The National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) was founded in 1977 to ensure that abused, neglected, and court-involved children are treated fairly and have a voice in court. Just as a child needs a doctor for medical problems, a child needs an attorney for legal problems that can profoundly affect their life. Yet, in many places across the country, children are not provided access to counsel. Children in court need lawyers of their own, we're working to make sure they have them (see CounselForKids.org). NACC serves as a national child advocacy organization to strengthen the delivery and quality of legal services for children and families and advance the rights and interests of children and families. NACC works to improve child welfare law, practice, and policy through Training and Certification programs that increase the quality of legal representation and ensure children have a voice in court; Membership and Annual Conference programs that build a practitioner network and support the field with legal education; and Policy Advocacy programs to advance children’s rights and well-being. Across all programs, NACC works with young professionals who have lived experience in the foster care system to co-design attorney training and policy advocacy efforts.
