About This Cause
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO The first HOBY Colorado Leadership Seminar was held in 1978. Over the years the number of participants, the location and the scope of the seminar has changed, but the vision to cultivate and empower young adults to make a positive difference in world has remained constant. HOBY Colorado, after 40 years, continues to strive to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY Colorado unites sophomores in high school from around the state and provides them with the opportunity to exchange ideas, engage in challenging discussions and reinforce their commitment to volunteerism and leadership. HOBY Colorado holds its annual leadership seminar on the University of Denver campus in Denver, CO. At the four-day seminar the students participate in panels, group discussions and breakout sessions, diversity and leadership development training and a Leadership For Service Project. At the end of the seminar, all participants are challenged to put their leadership skills into action by completing at least 100 hours of service in their communities. At our 2018 HOBY Seminar, we served 230 students - our largest cohort of ambassadors to date! Our 2019 goal is to expand access to the HOBY Colorado seminar through our recruitment efforts and fundraising for student scholarships. OUR IMPACT ON THE AMBASSADORS As a result of participating in the HOBY Leadership Seminar, students gain superior critical thinking skills, the ability to identify and tap into their personal leadership strengths, improved goal-setting skills, and a comprehension of, and a commitment to, leadership and service. Countless testimonials from students, parents and school staff have told us we are doing this successfully. “I never thought education could be taught in such an insightful and creative manner. Everyone here is involved, dedicated, and has so much energy it could rival the sun. The positivity and inclusiveness of HOBY has made me feel at home. HOBY has given us insightful discussions, inspiring speaker panels, debates about important real-world issues and teamwork activities. HOBY is not what I expected - it’s so much more. It’s my hope that more kids can come and thrive in this incredible community” - HOBY 2018 Alum, Thunder Ridge High School “Coming from a small town, HOBY was able to open my eyes. HOBY also helped me learn my strengths and grow as a leader. Without HOBY, I would still be the quiet person I was before the seminar - the kid without a voice” - HOBY 2018 Alum, Cheyenne Wells High School “Through HOBY, I have found this kind of rediscovery and reevaluation of myself. I have realized that I am gifted with so many more strengths than I thought I was capable of having. Throughout the seminar, I have also created so many forever friendships along with learning the importance of teamwork, communication, encouragement, and open-mindedness” - HOBY 2018 Alum, Limon High School “It is a rare occasion that a student has the opportunity to be in a community like HOBY. At this age teenagers feel invincible; we believe we can conquer the world. People are always telling me that my generation is the future. We still have this fiery belief in us that will change and shape the world. HOBY only encourages that, and molds our passion so that we know how to effectively use it in this world to make a difference. It is an amazing feeling to know you can change the world. HOBY teaches that we can carry this passion all throughout our lives” - HOBY 2018 Alum, Rock Canyon High School OUR IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY HOBY Colorado alumni have logged thousands of service hours on HOBY’s website, confirming our alumni are returning from their HOBY Seminar empowered and enthusiastic about leading through service. Our 2018 Ambassadors have collectively logged 3,000 hours of community service since June, highlighting the ripple effect of the HOBY program in communities across our state!
