Mission Statement

Project PAVE is ending violence by empowering youth to build healthy relationships.

About This Cause

Established in 1986 in response to a number of violent incidents in the Denver area, community leaders came together to create a framework for intervening early in the lives of youth and families exposed to relationship violence and to promote alternatives to violence in youth relationships. PAVE has a long history of providing innovative, evidence-based, and culturally-responsive services for survivors and their families in our community. It is the promise of our mission that youth who receive services and education are less likely to continue cycles of violence later in life. Our legacy bears witness to the realization of our mission in the lives of thousands of participants. To accomplish its mission, PAVE implements two program strategies: Healthy Relationships Education and Early Intervention Services. Project PAVE's Early Intervention comprehensive mental health services include therapy, support groups, and advocacy. School Based Therapy is trauma-informed individual therapy provided to youth survivors of violence in the school. Therapists most commonly work on safety planning, coping skills, mental health issues, healing from trauma, and healthy relationship skills PAVE's Youth and Family Advocacy supports therapy clients or other students at school and/or their families to assist with meeting basic needs (food, housing, legal support, employment, etc.) Supportive Groups provide additional support, coping skills and tools to youth survivors of violence identified in PAVE classes or through school staff. Most commonly, the groups have focused on managing stress and anxiety, utilizing healthy communication techniques, handling shame and guilt responses, healthy relationships, valuing self, setting personal boundaries, body positivity, and anxiety. PAVE's Healthy Relationships Education includes Path to Healthy Relationships (PTHR), True Man, and Brave Woman. PTHR helps students build the skills needed to change abusive dating norms, challenge rigid views of gender roles, improve conflict resolution, promote help seeking by survivors and perpetrators, and reduce acceptance of abusive behaviors by their friends and peers. True Man is a healthy masculinity curriculum focused on helping young men regulate emotions, break down gender stereotypes, develop healthy dating and peer relationships, understand consent, practice nonviolent communication, and develop allyship skills. Brave Woman provides young women with the tools and knowledge to build healthier relationships and break down gender stereotypes. This curriculum includes education & skill building on healthy relationships, communication, emotional regulation, gender stereotyping, allyship, leadership development, healthier definitions of femininity, and countering negative messages from media and society about womanhood. PAVE's Youth Community Educators Program (YCEP) trains high school students to provide peer-to-peer education healthy relationship education. YCEPers also complete community projects in Denver and receive professional development training, develop individual growth plans and goals, and are prepared to be the next generation of community leaders.
