About This Cause
Friendship Bridge is a nonprofit, social enterprise that provides microfinance, education, and health services to women in rural Guatemala. Our clients live in rural areas where the rate of poverty is the highest. The average Friendship Bridge client is a 37-year-old Mayan woman whose household earns between $1.11 and $4.16 a day. On average she has only 3.4 years of formal education, has four children, cannot read or write, and is unlikely to speak Spanish, the official language of Guatemala. All of this adds up to an inability to secure a loan that might better her situation. By empowering women through microfinance and education topics based on their expressed needs, we are creating generational change in Guatemalan households and communities.
