Mission Statement
Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization established in 1992 to give youth ages 16 to 24 a chance to earn an income and learn hands-on job skills while serving in their communities. In its first year, 20 youth served Denver neighborhoods through a single 10-week program. Today, MHYC engages over 200 youth (called Corpsmembers) every year through several comprehensive programs that integrate paid work experience on community service projects with leadership development, career exploration and education. During our twenty-two year history, Mile High Youth Corps has grown from a small, seasonal, neighborhood-based organization to a comprehensive, year-round, regional program serving 15 counties from two regional offices, Metro Denver and the Southern Front Range. Our mission is to help youth make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences.
About This Cause
Mile High Youth Corps serves Colorado youth and communities through four distinct, year-round, comprehensive programs for youth ages 16-24. Our programs integrate paid work experience on community service projects with leadership development, career exploration, and education, putting youth to work in neighborhoods, public parks, and open spaces throughout Metro Denver and the Southern Front Range. These four programs are: AmeriCorps Leadership and Conservation (ACLC) – This 11-month program (Jan-Dec) provides youth with the opportunity to serve in three conservation areas: water, energy, and land. Participants serve a total of 1,700 hours from January to December, each earning an AmeriCorps education award. In the spring and fall, Corpsmembers participate in our energy and water programs, installing resource-saving measures in low-income homes and nonprofit facilities. Through orientation and training, youth learn the skills needed to complete the work and provide client education. Additional training focuses on developing the leadership and technical skills required to serve as Peer Leaders on Land Conservation crews during the summer and fall months. Energy and Water Conservation – This is a five-month program (Jan-June; July-Dec) during which Corpsmembers are trained to conduct an energy assessment in low-income housing and nonprofit facilities. After this energy audit, Corpsmembers provide client education and install water and energy-efficiency measures including compact fluorescent light bulbs, aerators, programmable thermostats, and high-efficiency toilets. Land Conservation – This is a summer and fall program (May-Nov) rooted in the tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. Youth are assigned to one of 16 crews that work for 10 to 12 weeks on a variety of projects that include trail building and maintenance, fire mitigation, flood restoration, habitat restoration, tree planting, and the removal of invasive plant species. The land conservation work of MHYC Corpsmembers impacts hundreds of acres of national parks, public trails, and community spaces each year in Colorado. YouthBuild – This nine-month program (Aug-May) engages underserved youth in green construction projects. YouthBuild participants spend half of their time learning construction skills and building low-income housing units, with the remaining time devoted to GED/HS diploma classes. These educational classes also incorporate training in leadership development, civic engagement, life skills, and career readiness.
