Mission Statement
Partners in Housing provides homeless families with children the hope and opportunity to achieve self-sufficiency through supportive services and transitional housing. Our program gives homeless families with children the stability and support to help them locate employment, improve their education, income, and personal well-being, and move on to stable housing. Our mission centers on empowering homeless families with the skills and confidence to succeed and never be homeless again.
About This Cause
Through our Homeless Self-Sufficiency Program, our goal is to provide homeless families a safe, stable place where they gain the knowledge and practical skills to overcome their personal barriers and achieve long-term self-sufficiency. Families spend up to one year in the program and we provide the following supports and services, on an on-going basis. Transitional Housing – By providing families with one year of safe, affordable housing, we allow them to stabilize their situation and concentrate their efforts on making positive, long-term life changes. We match households entering the program with a home to meet their needs, including family size, accessibility, safety, and transportation. Clients pay 30% of their actual income for rent, minus several deductions, to ensure ongoing affordability and to help them build a positive rental history. Case Management – Case workers help clients develop an Individualized Service Plan setting goals for employment, education, family well-being, and housing, as well as step-by-step plans to achieve those goals. Each plan is unique, addressing client’s particular strengths and barriers to self-sufficiency. The program focuses on helping clients find work by engaging in career planning, teaching job-search skills, and encouraging them as they submit job applications. Case workers also help clients access critical mainstream resources, such as health care and childcare.Case Managers work alongside our clients, encouraging them, providing guidance, and helping them learn to take charge of their lives. Life Skills Workshops – Life skills classes help clients gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed financially, vocationally, and personally. PIH offers classes at least once a month and every client is required to participate in our core curriculum, which centers on financial literacy and job readiness/work skills. We also offer classes on topics promoting personal growth and health, such as nutritious cooking, parenting skills, stress management, and healthy relationships. PIH provides dinner and childcare for families at the workshops, helping to eliminate barriers to attendance. Budget/Credit Counseling –Budget counseling helps clients learn money-management skills, enabling them to stretch their income into a budget that meets their family’s needs. Clients meet monthly with staff or a trained volunteer to discuss their household budget, spending patterns, and financial questions. These sessions also help clients learn more about developing a savings plan, using banking services, or using debt responsibly. Separate credit counseling helps clients understand how to monitor and repair their credit, so they can be “rental-ready” for when they complete our program. Our self-sufficiency program helps families access the resources to overcome homelessness, and develop the sense of empowerment and personal accountability to take control of their lives. The long-term success of our program indicates the supports and services we provide are helping families become self-supporting.
