Mission Statement

The mission of Safe Passage is to give abused children a voice and enable the healing process by acting as the single source of contact for medical, investigative, and legal services.

About This Cause

Safe Passage provides comprehensive forensic and healing services to child victims of sexual assault and physical abuse in Colorado’s Pikes Peak Region. We also offer services to children who have been witnesses to domestic violence, homicide, and other violent crimes; to developmentally disabled adults; and to non-offending caregivers. The organization grew out of a small, less collaborative program operated by Colorado’s Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The founders – a group of community leaders in law enforcement, prosecution, child protection services, and the medical arena – recognized the need for a larger investigative and support program and, in response, developed this Children’s Advocacy Center. We were incorporated in 1994 and we are accredited by the National Children’s Alliance. Before the existence of Safe Passage, child victims in the Pikes Peak Region were forced to obtain the necessary services at multiple locations following an incident of abuse. Medical exams were conducted at hospitals by staff who were often unfamiliar with the particular needs of child victims. Interviews were conducted at police departments, forcing families into environments unsuitable for children and subjecting children to interviewing techniques not appropriate for them. Locating post-investigation care was often difficult, requiring distressed caregivers to make numerous trips to multiple agencies. Working with our team partners in the law enforcement, medical, mental health, social services, and legal fields, Safe Passage offers a one-stop alternative to the prior scenario. All elements of the abuse investigations can be handled in one child-sensitive location where the children and their non-offending caregivers also receive healing services. Over the past 21 years, Safe Passage has supported and protected more than 16,000 child victims ages 18 and younger. In FY 2015, we provided forensic and healing services to 805 abused children, giving them a safe place in which to disclose the event and details of their abuse, assisting in the criminal investigations, and helping the children and their non-offending caregivers begin their journey toward healing.
