About This Cause
The Association offer's "the teachings, history, philosophies, theories, culture, and physical techniques of Shaolin Hung Mei” – through its intent to promulgate the study and promotion of authentic Chinese history and culture to its students and to the general public by way of its classes, performances, programs and special events. SHMKF seeks to: 1) bridge Eastern and Western cultures and philosophies; 2) foster, through performances, seminars, exhibitions, and community service activities, a greater understanding/awareness for the Chinese culture; 3) provide programs, activities, and events enabling those of Chinese descent to maintain their heritage and transmit this rich heritage to their children; 4) enhance the relevance and raise awareness for the value of studying a traditional Chinese martial art through changing the way in which that art it presented but not through diluting the content – raise the level of academics to a point not often associated with martial studies; 5) through the execution of the above, enhance the sustainability while maintaining the integrity and heritage of the traditional art of Shaolin Hung Mei in a rapidly changing, technologically oriented environment; and 6) promote self-awareness, confidence, humility, and compassion as well as teach physical skills to its students. Brief History: Shaolin Hung Mei was founded in 1993, formed a non-profit corporation in July of 1999, applied for its tax exempt status in June, 2002, and in three short months, was granted its 501C(3) status retroactive to the day of incorporation. The Association is dedicated to the teaching and promulgation of Chinese philosophy, history, martial studies and culture and has become an integral part of the Asian Pacific American communities of Colorado. We have just completed our 29th year of activities related to the Lunar New Year and are considered a “tradition” by the many organizations for whom we’ve performed for the bulk of – if not all – of that time. Our performances of the Chinese Dragon and Lions and traditional Shaolin arts are in great demand throughout the year by APA organizations, schools, corporations, nonprofit groups and the general public. The Association's dedication to promoting Chinese/Asian culture to the greater Boulder/Denver metro region and surrounding areas is amply demonstrated by the cultural initiatives that the Association has helped plan and execute as well as by the many awards the organization has received. To further its mission, SHMKF in 2002 established the Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts. Today, a myriad of programs related to Chinese culture and ranging from traditional dance to Chinese medicine are offered at the Academy. In addition to these on-going programs, the Academy plays host to a variety of singular special events, lectures, workshops, etcetera (example: lecture entitled: "Qi Gong for Personal Health"). Virtually all regular programs and special events are open to the general public and many are offered for no fees although donations are solicited. During 2023, SHMKF participated in close to 60 events not including its classes, other classes offered at its "Academy of Chinese Martial and Cultural Arts", or management of the Academy. We are particularly proud of the fact that SHMKF was the very first, formal Lion and Dragon performance organization, introducing these art forms to the greater Boulder/metro region, as well as the flexibility we’ve built into our activities enabling us to participant in events for pre-schoolers to a senior center; from a performance inside a restaurant with approximately 60 to a performance in a large auditorium with more than 2500 in attendance; from an outdoor, parking lot performance to a $225.00 per plate, black tie fund raiser; and more – all in the same 48 hour period. Of particular note was the number of youth and senior related lectures, workshops and seminars at such venues/schools as: WOW Children’s Museum, Casey Middle School, Primrose Pre-School, CU Boulder, Bohua Chinese School, Denver Children’s Museum, Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies, and Casey Middle School. In addition, SHMKF performed at Carillon House for Boulder’s senior population. In 2023, we have already presented performances and/or workshops for: WOW Children’s Museum, Asian Pacific American Law Students at CU-Boulder, Bear Creek Elementary School, the Dawson School, Denver Children's Museum, Primrose Pre-School, Bohua Chinese School (holds classes at Fairview High School), CU Boulder, Denver Chinese School, Global Village School, Denver-Kunming Sister Cities New Year Celebration, Organization of Chinese Americans New Year Celebration, the Far East Center's New Year and Mid-Autumn Celebrations, the Asian American Bar Association Annual Banquet, and so many others. We consider such activities very rewarding as they are a sign of the broader community’s recognition and acceptance of SHMKF’s grounding in traditional history, culture and philosophy. Of special note... In February of 2023, we received a Proclamation from the President of the Colorado State Senate, Steven Fenberg, congratulating SHMKF for 30 years of service to the area's communities. We were also very privileged to have performed at x-Mayor Hancock's official apology for the ransacking of Denver's Chinatown which occurred in October of 1880, in the Capitol building as Governor Polis signed the new Bill recognizing the Lunar New Year as an official State holiday as well as for the public unveiling of a mural painted on the side of a building located at the entrance to the alley which was Denver's Chinatown - the mural commemorating the riot which had occurred in 1880 - all very special and unique events.
