About This Cause
Rivers are the lifeblood of Colorado. They provide water for cities, agriculture, industries, recreation, and are a part of Colorado's beautiful landscape. As populations have expanded throughout Colorado, extensive amounts of water have been withdrawn from our state’s rivers for human use. The added impact of climate change on Colorado’s snowpack is reducing the amount of water available to begin with. All of this is resulting in rivers that flow too low or even rivers that run completely dry—stranding and exposing fish, damaging riparian habitat, degrading water quality, and impacting the local economies that rely on our rivers. Colorado Water Trust was established in 2001 to restore flows to Colorado’s rivers in need. Over the past 21 years, we have returned over 16.8 billion gallons of water to nearly 600 miles of rivers and streams. Healthy streamflows support natural river habitat, outdoor recreation, and the beautiful Colorado landscapes we all love. We work in collaboration with water users throughout the state so that our projects not only benefit river health but also the local communities and economies that rely on rivers. Colorado Water Trust's team of expert water lawyers and water resource specialists innovate within Colorado’s system of water laws to develop solutions that balance the health of the river and its beneficial uses that support people’s livelihoods. We have pioneered many market-based temporary and permanent solutions within Colorado’s water laws that can benefit both people and the environment. As increasing populations and the threat of climate change place more demands on our rivers, we need to protect our rivers to ensure that future generations can continue to thrive in Colorado as we have.
