Mission Statement

Bridge Kids International, Inc. uses the power of African heritage culture to create communities that support the well being of young people. We help young people of Africa and the African Diaspora unleash their social entrepreneurial spirits to solve economic development, education, environmental, girls' rights, and health challenges and link African, African-American, Caribbean and other Diaspora groups for the purposes of friendship, cooperation, and individual and community empowerment.

About This Cause

At Bridge Kids International, we are raising the next generation to inherit their communities and the world. BKI envisions young people and communities that have the confidence, skills, tools and resources to develop creative solutions and thrive. In Louisville, KY, BKI reaches approximately 250 people annually through its hands-on, educational and cultural programs and 700 people through the African Heritage Festival. BKI’s Culture is the Cure programs promote positive racial/ethnic/cultural and gender identity, empower young families, nurture creative confidence, and foster self-determination in young people from birth to young adulthood. Highlighted programs include the 7 Generations African Heritage Culture Camp, Brown Girls LOL (Living Out Loud), STEAM Club, Cooking with Kin, We Made It design and fabrication program, the Creative Culture Video Series, a city-wide African Heritage Festival, and the Kizazi Fund, a child-focused, culturally-based, community-centered system for generational wealth building in Black families. Over 90% of participants in BKI programs report they have learned new skills, challenged themselves, their confidence has increased, and they have a strong sense of their African Heritage. In addition, Bridge Kids International transformed a deteriorating building in an underutilized pocket park to establish Our Place at Ben Washer Park, the organization’s global headquarters and home to its hands-on, life-affirming programs. In keeping with BKI’s values of self-sufficiency and sustainability, two social enterprises run by young adults -- Our Place Café featuring Nice Cream and the Our Place Boutique – help fund the operations of the building and programs provided there. Globally, BKI organizes and supports Bridge Kids Groups comprised of young people who design and implement projects to transform their lives and communities. There are currently BK Groups in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda and Senegal.
