Mission Statement
Thread harnesses the power of relationships to create a new social fabric of diverse individuals deeply engaged with young people facing the most significant opportunity and achievement gaps. Our community is committed to ending social isolation and building a more equitable culture in which everyone thrives.
About This Cause
Thread enrolls ninth grade students from six Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) who are academically performing in the bottom 25% of their class. Students facing such academic challenges are often contending with external systemic obstacles which can derail their efforts to achieve their goals. Thread commits to our young people for ten years and pairs them with up to four caring adult volunteers who represent a diverse cross section of Baltimore. Together, volunteers and young people learn, grow and build deep, mutually beneficial relationships through shared experiences such as weekly dinners, baseball games, family outings, completing homework and college visits. Thread complements this individualized support and coaching with resource allocation and programs, including after-school tutoring, trips outside of Baltimore, and community service. Since our founding in 2004, Thread has grown from two volunteer founders and 15 students at one high school site to 879 young people and alumni from across six high school sites in community with over 3,000 volunteers and collaborators.
