Mission Statement

Green Arrow CoLab's mission is to support young adults harmed by systemic injustice, structural racism, and a societal disconnect as they reconnect to themselves and their future opportunity for success through an earth-based program of healing, self-actualization and connection to community and nature.

About This Cause

Through an earth-based program of healing, self-actualization and connection to community and nature, Green Arrow CoLab provides a comprehensive gardening and mindfulness curriculum and training for youth and young adults (ages 14-27) who have had involvement with the justice system. Green Arrow CoLab has determined there is an overwhelming need to support young people impacted by the criminal justice system. We recognize the roots of disproportionate harm comes from socialized behaviors, racial disparities from the justice system, a disparate educational system, and generational poverty and trauma. Our work was founded to address the gap in services for system-impacted youth. Other programs solely focus on outcomes - employment and housing - rather than the underlying issues that prevent many of these young people from finding stability and positive long term change. Our theory of change addresses the need to move young people out of trauma responses and dysregulation and into a healthier more aligned emotional state, through teaching and fostering a connection to nature and self. Two years ago we launched our pilot program at Anti-Recidivism Coalition’s reentry house in Koreatown/Pico-Union El Salvador Community Corridor, Los Angeles. Working with previously incarcerated men (ages 18-25), we designed, built, and planted a garden to revive the piece of land and bring bounty and harvest to those that tend it and live in the residence. We successfully engaged residents in a program of gardening, healing, and self-exploration. This project offered us the opportunity to better understand the successes, hopes, and greatest need for the communities and population we work with. We just launched our second location and have 5 interested organizations, all who serve a similar population. Starting this year, we are working with Citizen Farmers Academy to implement a Training the Trainer program - starting with a cohort of 10 students. They will be trained in our earth-based and trauma informed curriculum and learn to start garden projects in their communities. This programming directly responds to needs in the population we serve: offering justice systems-impacted young adults job training in an agricultural related field, youth access to an earth-based healing curriculum, and expanding community access to fresh foods. The number of young people, families, and community members we impact will grow exponentially as our trainee’s start their own programs. We see our role in the future of the restorative justice model as one of providing an alternative to the traumatizing system that our youth encounter. To achieve our bigger vision, we are using our learnings and partnerships to actively develop an Healing Center alternative for juvenile incarceration that offers opportunity for intensive healing and transformation.
