Mission Statement

Meto is a tech-based nonprofit intent on making access to quality higher education a reality for all students in Africa.

About This Cause

Every year, tens of millions of students graduate from high schools in sub-Saharan Africa. But less than 10% of them make it to university. That is the lowest university enrollment percentage in the world. And even for the students that do make it to university, very few end up in good-fit universities that maximize students’ potential in the classroom and in their post-university careers. This is a major problem. Access to higher education transforms lives. But hard-working African students are not getting the educational opportunities they deserve. The issue isn’t a lack of qualified students--even the lowest income students often perform at extraordinary levels. It’s not a lack of spots at universities around the world either--there are thousands of universities that would love to have these students on campus. We know this because we’ve talked to them about it! As you might imagine, a lack of scholarship funding is a major obstacle. But students, educators, and government officials in Africa have made it clear to us that there is another massive issue that you might not expect: information. Far too many students don’t know which schools to apply to, or even how to apply to them. We call this the “information gap.” The information gap stops students from applying to excellent, affordable universities in neighboring countries. It stops students from learning about incredible scholarship opportunities around the world. It leads students to waste their application time and energy on universities that they cannot afford or are unlikely to get into. And it is even worse for students who have limited internet access. All too often, the information gap leads to students not going to university at all. But what if there were a simple, scalable way to solve the information gap by connecting African students with good-fit universities across Africa and around the world? And better yet, what if the solution to the information gap also addressed the lack of scholarship funding? Enter Meto: Meto is a nonprofit that bridges the information gap for African students by reversing the application process. Instead of students finding universities and navigating the incredibly complex international admissions process by themselves, universities find students. Here’s how it works: First, Mētō collects the student information that universities want, like GPAs, Test Scores, academic interests, Extracurricular Pursuits, Geographic Preferences, and financial information. Next, Mētō aggregates this data and shares it with universities in Africa and around the world, allowing universities to sort by the criteria that matters most to them. Finally, universities contact students that interest them. Students get emails directly to their inbox informing them that a university has determined they would be a competitive candidate for admission and will help them apply if they are interested. This is life changing information. What was once a nearly impossible task for students -- that is, finding and applying to the right institutions, whether in Africa or around the world -- becomes incredibly simple with the help of Meto’s online meeting place. Because the process is so simple for students, Meto is eminently scalable. We believe we can reach tens of thousands, perhaps even millions of students per year with our fully realized vision. The potential impact is incalculable. Want to hear some more good news? Meto’s unique partnerships with universities enable us to create full scholarships for Africa’s lowest income students at elite universities across the African continent. These are brilliant students who are unable to afford even the cheapest local options. At scale, we expect to generate over a thousand full scholarships each year for these students. The sky is the limit: We started in late 2018 and have already reached several thousand African students. This is a great start. But we are dreaming so much bigger. Partner with Meto today and help continue the transformation of higher education in Africa.
