About This Cause
Reckoning, Inc. is 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to examine the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow oppression in America, and to create ways for communities to engage with this information through research projects, media productions, educational curricula, online content, and other means. One of the most significant achievements of our organization is the production of “The Reckoning,” an audio documentary series that has aired on 52 stations in 16 states around the country, and is also available as a podcast series. Our organization is engaged with several other initiatives, including the Kentucky African American Civil War Soldiers Project. The goal of this project is to uncover names, documents, and other information about the lives of formerly enslaved people from Kentucky by using military documents pertaining to the U.S. Colored Troops of the Union Army. This information will be disseminated through a free, searchable online database. This project will also include the creation of related educational curricula for elementary, middle and high school students based on the documents found in the database, which will be made freely available to educators in Kentucky and elsewhere. We are also doing a concurrent research project in which students and volunteers are transcribing and indexing records from any of Kentucky’s churches which baptised and/or married people who were enslaved by members of their congregations. We have already found such records for 26 Catholic Churches in 12 counties. All church records will then be entered into a free, searchable database available on the Reckoning, Inc. website, which can be searched by name, parish, county, and other criteria.
