Mission Statement
Welcome Home SIS is a non-profit, Christ-centered organization that acts as a safety net, catering to women and children who have been impacted by Ohio’s criminal justice system. Our mission is to empower System Impacted Survivors with the essential tools and life skills to become productive members of society and obtain self-sufficiency. System-impacted women face significant barriers to building stable and healthy lives when they return to their communities, including unemployment and lack of access to education, permanent housing, health care and reuniting with their children. Our transitional housing program serves as a replication site and a proud member of the nationwide network of SAFE Houses, a supportive housing model founded in 1989 in Los Angeles by Susan Burton of A New Way of Life. Our SAFE House is the first and only one of its kind in the state of Ohio. Being released from prison with little or no resources leaves many with no hope and puts them at risk of reoffending. We aim to prevent another crisis by acting as a safety net and providing resources, all while reducing recidivism and keeping the community safe.
About This Cause
Welcome Home SIS’ transitional housing and reentry program fulfills the basic needs for housing, non-residential support services, and opportunities for personal and spiritual empowerment for women exiting prison in Ohio. Often, housing is their most immediate need. We recognize that this alone cannot serve as the remedy for women transitioning back into their communities, and as a result, we are committed to ensuring women are supported in addressing all of their needs to restore dignity and hope while further ensuring their sustainability. In-house resources and services for women include basic needs such as clothing, food, and hygiene products; assistance obtaining birth certificates, identification, and social security cards. We also provide career development, counseling, and case management; social and community events; and legal support/advocacy for family reunification, and record expungement. We encourage each woman to heed God's calling, focus on self-care, commit to giving back to her community, and always strive to reach her full potential. Our program is gender-specific to meet the unique requirements of women, focusing on family reunification, trauma-informed care, and treatment for issues with substances. Our holistic approach is multi-faceted, as there is no 'one size fits all,' every woman has different needs. Upon arrival, steps are taken to ensure the best possible outcome of her overall well-being. This encompasses her physical, mental and spiritual health. The residents are required to have a physical check-up, mental health assessment, find a sponsor and a home church by week two. The girls start every day with morning meditation and prepare and eat dinner together. This promotes a sense of belonging and acceptance, encourages teamwork, demonstrating the importance of every member. Weekends are reserved for family and members are encouraged to take active roles in their loved one’s transition.
