Mission Statement

The mission of Tyler's House KC is to provide a safe after-school space where create arts programming serves to heal, connect, and promote emotional wellness among the young people in our community.

About This Cause

Working toward a vision of a community where our young people understand their value, Tyler’s House KC (THKC) seeks to offer a warm and safe after-school space, an evening meal, and creative arts programs and resources. Seeking to meet each young person where they are, we strive to form trusting relationships that will empower young people to navigate their worlds. In partnership with Johnson County Mental Health Center, Tyler's House KC welcomes teens to its facility located within walking distance of both Shawnee Mission North High School and Shawnee Mission's Horizons High School in Mission, KS. Thanks to support from individual donors and nonprofit organizations, THKC offers activities, meals, snacks, mental health resources, basic needs to students in Northeast Johnson County. In a warm, youth-centered environment, THKC's after school space includes a snack bar, comfortable seating for doing homework, a quiet room, a small library, computer gaming, board games, art supplies, and a small stage with a piano for performing arts activities. After being in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, local mental health professionals warn of an impending crisis as young people are struggling as they have recently returned to school and regular activities, to a new normal. A recent community health needs assessment by Children’s Mercy Hospital showed mental health issues among our youth above the national average, and a striking rise in diagnosis of depression, teens taking prescription medicines for mental health, and students who stopped doing their usual activities because of feelings of sadness or hopelessness. Children’s Mercy director of behavioral medicine, Sarah Soden, reports an average of 1,000 mental health referrals a month from its outpatient clinics and more than 100 landing in the hospital’s emergency rooms each month for mental health assessments. Tyler's House KC and its volunteers offer mentorship and foster connections as teens develop socially and emotionally. In addition, Johnson County Mental Health Center supports THKC with professional mental health resources. During the months of social distancing, THKC provided basic needs and meal care packages to 72 high school students containing nonperishable food items and personal hygiene products to sustain them during winter and summer breaks from school. Currently serving a student client base of approximately 30 high school students, THKC aims to become a primary resource for teens in our community.
