Mission Statement
The mission of the Museum of Beadwork is to illuminate the history of beads throughout the world, and to explore the cultural and artistic significance of beadwork in art and adornment. We focus on how beadwork reveals the interconnections between people and cultures through trade, human migration and the influence of one culture on another. Our goal is to inspire through exceptional artwork, and to build relationships between artists and communities.
About This Cause
The Museum of Beadwork is a new museum established on Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine. In the fall of 2019, the Museum of Beadwork filed its Articles of Incorporation and was shortly after granted non-profit 501c3 status and now functions with a 3-person governing Board of Directors. A collaborative vision of Heather Kahn and Kristina Skillin, the Museum of Beadwork is the only museum dedicated exclusively to the history and artistry of beadwork worldwide. The museum will establish an exhibition area, as well as form an artistic community and provide a center of learning. Our intention is to showcase beaded artwork by housing and displaying the finest examples of beaded jewelry, clothing, sculpture, accessories, and tapestries as well as the work of contemporary artists. As part of our core mission, the Museum of Beadwork explores ways in which beads build relationships and bond us together. Our ongoing exhibitions will present information on beadwork styles from all over the globe, the historic development of beads throughout human history, highlights of modern bead making processes, as well as extensive representations of this art form. Our goal is to open our gallery doors in early 2022.
