Mission Statement
Warehouses4Good is a non-profit developer of public market and food hub facilities in under-served rural counties, Native American communities, and US Territories, advancing food security, access, equity, sovereignty, safety, and opportunity. These facilities make their communities, and the nation, more resilient. Our vision is to improve the health, well-being, standard of living, and economic opportunities for food producers and food-insecure families.
About This Cause
America's food supply chain infrastructure is overwhelmingly located in urban areas. With more than 20% of the population, rural communities have access to less than 5% of the country's merchant food storage capacity. The impacts of this imbalance are significant: reduced economic opportunity and limited food access, both contributing to poverty, poor health outcomes, and, for school-age children, difficulty learning. Warehouses4Good works with community partners in persistent poverty counties to plan, design, fund, and build food warehouses with ambient, cold, and freezer storage. These facilities provide supply chain benefits at the first mile (aggregation, value-added processing, etc.) and last mile (distribution, rural grocer and food pantry support, etc.), building capacity in the regional food system. Beneficiaries include small, limited resource farmers and ranchers, entrepreneurial food processors, intermediaries, grocers, hunger relief agencies, and, ultimately, the families that depend on food access to maintain their health and well-being. Projects are underway in the Mississippi Delta, Kentucky Appalachia, the Hopi Reservation, southern Illinois, the Rosebud Lakota reservation, and northwestern North Dakota. Our goal is 100 warehouses this decade, serving as many as 500 of America's most distressed counties, Tribal areas, and Territories.
