Mission Statement

Torus bridges gaps between people and communities by facilitating transformative experiences of language and culture exchange.

About This Cause

Torus was founded in 2020 by Ramin Tokhi who was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, raised in Moscow, Russia and lives in Portland, Oregon. Our primary activity is to offer free one-on-one virtual classes; and community-based, multilevel, group English classes tailored to immigrant and refugee communities. These classes help our constituents develop language and life skills simultaneously to ease how they navigate the US culture and systems. Our organization is unique because our classes are in community-based settings (such as libraries, community centers, and at other community-based organizations). We go where the need is instead of inviting learners to our spaces. Torus' Language & Life Skills programming is one of the rare ESL programs that is built around the needs of immigrants and refugees. Usually there is a wide variation in levels; and people come and go to the class depending on what is going on in their lives. This level of flexibility allows us to serve those who are on the margins, who are unable to attend community college classes or other institutions. In addition, our culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning as well as resource sharing allows us to teach about relevant topics that pertain to the experiences of immigrants. We are seeking out donations to launch the Torus mobile app, which serves as a comprehensive platform, harmoniously integrating the three pivotal elements of our operations: learners, volunteers, and the dynamic interaction amongst them and our staff. It will be the first refugee-led and created mobile app for refugees and immigrants in the state of Oregon. Thank you so much for your consideration to donate!
